Horrid

It Came From The Archives! “Horrid Review: The Horrors Of Extreme Feelings”

0

By Brandon Scott on Apr 5th, 2023

Horrid is a book about emotions more than anything else. Its plot, its ending, its momentum are all in service of getting across big emotional moments.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: A Delightful Adaptation

0

By Brandon Scott on Apr 3rd, 2023

Let’s get two things out of the way regarding Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. First off, I know some stuff about the game, but I’m not a hardcore TTRPG player. I got some of the abundant references—but a lot of them went right over my head, and my criticisms may be affected or skewed in some way by this. And second, it needs to be acknowledged from a pop culture history standpoint how cool it is that this film exists at all.

Friday Fiction: The Cats of Plain House (Part 1)

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 31st, 2023

Today’s story is only the beginning. In a neighborhood you’ve never visited, there’s a house. It’s called Plain House, for it is not worth describing how it looks.

Star Wars Rebels: Mostly Tropey Fun

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 29th, 2023

Star Wars Rebels mostly escaped my radar during its 2014-2018 run, but it was a positive surprise to explore now. Despite feeling like this franchise is now racing towards oversaturation (if it has not already reached it), Star Wars television shows have—for apparently a long time—been mostly solid little pieces of media.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Nostalgic But Predictable

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 27th, 2023

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a show hard to review as its own thing. While lately a good chunk of Star Wars is an act of accounting for missing parts in the timeline and universe, Kenobi has especially little space to experiment—its plot is so heavily stuck by continuity that there are practically no surprises to be had. We know who can and cannot die in any scene; even people who don’t know Star Wars well will have a general idea of what will happen in this plot.

Friday Fiction: Have A Drink…And Then The Same Drink

By Brandon Scott on Mar 24th, 2023

You may have read this introduction before. I cannot speak for certain. Time can be strange like that. Sometimes it doesn’t move the way you would expect it to move.

Foundation: Almost-Phenomenal Science Fiction

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 22nd, 2023

To review Foundation, I must reveal my lack of foreknowledge. I’ve not read the books; I’ve heard amazing things and that they’re a seminal work of science fiction, but never ventured there myself. I probably should now: if they’re better than this show, they’re probably incredible.

Andor: A Strong New Era For Star Wars

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 20th, 2023

Perhaps the most notable thing about Andor is how immediately it establishes itself as different from the usual Star Wars fare. What little I’ve seen of more recent Mandalorian projects suggests this isn’t an isolated affair, but it is to me.

Friday Fiction: The Humming At Midnight (Part 2)

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 17th, 2023

In every tale of rules that must never be broken, someone breaks them. Humans, it seems, are sometimes too curious. And now our protagonist, Jeremy, has stayed up too long. And can hear the humming.

It Came From The Archives! “The Mandalorian: Proper Star Wars Returns”

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 15th, 2023

It’s been a long time since the first season of The Mandalorian came out. And, while I finish tackling reviewing some of the newer Disney+ Star Wars entries, let’s look back at what worked in the first three episodes and how much the series has (or hasn’t) changed.

Tantalus Depths

Tantalus Depths: Solid Sci-Fi Horror

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 13th, 2023

Tantalus Depths is the kind of book that the right audience will love. It’s a solid combination of cosmic horror, somewhat-hard science fiction, and has sprinkles of space epic. And perhaps its biggest triumph is how it balances those three things in an organic, unfolding way that never feels like a hard genre shift.

Friday Fiction: The Humming at Midnight (Part 1)

By Brandon Scott on Mar 10th, 2023

Today, we have a type of story that’s been with humanity forever. There have always been stories of things children must not do or risk terrible danger.
