SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Friday reaching orbit 9 minutes later. The new rocket-type is privately owned and it may in the future carry NASA astronauts to orbit.
“This has been a good day for SpaceX and a promising development for the US human space flight programme,” said Robyn Ringuette of SpaceX in a webcast of the launch.

Solid fuel explodes about 2% of the time because of air bubbles in production. One of the reasons Werner Von Braun left NASA was that he was against using solid fuel with manned rockets. SRB's cannot be turned off once started. After the Challenger accident, it turned out that Werner Von Braun was right.
