Extant: Season Two, Episode Seven – “The Other”

First Aired August 5th, 2015.

JD (played by Jeffery Dean Morgan) breaks into Tobias’ (played by David Morrissey) car and kidnaps him at gunpoint. JD brings Tobias to Molly (played by Halle Berry) who attempts to organize a peace conference between the humans and hybrids.

Tobias at first refuses because of the threat they pose but after Molly threatens to reveal she lied to Congress for him, he agrees to their terms. Tobias commissions the hybrids extinction after hearing a Chinese woman’s testimony of giving birth to a hybrid and the effects she suffered after. She’s later forced to undergo a marrow transplant to remove the alien DNA even though it would likely kill her. Molly and JD are later identified as biological terrorists to turn the public against them. Ares (played by Cleo Anthony), another hybrid, wants to disperse into major cities and continue populating and then give humans the choice to live with them or die, but Ahdu (played by Henderson Wade) talks him down. Ares is distrustful of JD and uses his powers to invade JD’s mind which leaves him furious. JD’s becomes worried that Molly isn’t trying to cure herself anymore and tells her she has to choose a side because she can’t have both.

If the pregnant women are now able to give birth without dying Ahdu and his hybrids have clearly taken steps to ensure their safety. That doesn’t really matter since Tobias has ordered these women to undergo deadly procedures. Between all the deaths and being kidnapped there was obviously no chance Tobias would have considered Molly’s offer. Ares may have literally just been born but you’d think he would have a better grasp of how to treat people. JD put a lot on the line to help them, and he has a point about Molly. She may want peaceful coexistence but when that fails Molly will have to choose and it looks like she’s not on the human side now. I think Ares will make a great antagonist. A former beta hybrid attempting to take control of the group and take what they want. If nothing else, Ares would ensure the start of a war since he’s basically proposed taking over the planet.

The latest Humanich, Lucas (played by Patrick Johnson), is activated and bonds with Ethan (played by Pierce Gagnon) and Lucy (played by Kiersey Clemmons). Lucy confronts Charlie (played by Tyler Hilton) when she discovers the Humanichs were given an expiration date. That night Lucy attempts to seduce Charlie but he resists and sends her away. Meanwhile, Tobias uses a supercomputer to locate the hybrids location and it calculates that in just over six months the hybrids will outnumber humans. He also has JD’s daughter Kelsey (played by Lyndon Smith) arrested in an attempt to lure JD out of hiding. Worried that he could disclose their location, Ares tries to stop JD from leaving but Molly uses her powers to force Ares to back down.

I’m a bit confused. There were a hundred Humanichs ready to go why is there now only one? Lucy now has yet another reason to turn against humanity, although if Humanichs want the human experience they would have to accept “dying” as an inevitability. Of course Charlie rejecting her advances definitely didn’t help things either. As nerdy as Charlie is, apparently the idea of a sexbot does not appeal to him. Taking Kelsey in order to lure out JD was a smart plan, the smarter plan would have been to take Ethan since Molly is spearheading the pro-alien movement. Ares has the potential to be a villain in his own right, leading the hybrids in a hostile takeover of earth.

JD and Molly share an emotional goodbye as he prepares to go and save Kelsey. While performing a recon mission of the scene Lucy gets Molly in her sights and prepares to shoot her, but Lucas convinces her to follow orders and not engage. One of the hybrid children comes up to them and Lucy knocks him out and takes him, she then calls Tobias to inform him they found the hybrids. That scene marked the the beginning of Lucy starting to turn her back on her creators and humans in general. I predict that soon enough the other Humanichs will follow suit and there will be another faction in the coming war. And once the other hybrids learn one of their own was captured and presumably experimented on, any ideas of peace will go out the door.

Quotes & Thoughts

“How the hell did you get in here?” “This gun says I don’t answer questions.”

I want to know more about the hybrids, what their race is called, the name of their planet etc. There must be a rich history there.

“I thought you wanted peace.” “It takes two sides for peace.”

I wonder how long after hybrids are born they are expected to go out into the world and procreate.
