Asteroid Apophis and Russian Armageddon Project

Asteroid Apophis is expected to pass close to the Earth in 2029 and again in 2036. Russian scientists are preparing to go where no man has gone before, except for the team of Bruce Willis in Armageddon movie.

Asteroid Apophis info and pictures

Asteroid Apophis is a 350m (1,100ft) wide piece of rock.

Asteroid Apophis is expected to pass close to the Earth in 2029 and again in 2036.

If this asteroid hit the planet Earth, it would release more than 100 000 times the energy released in the nuclear blast over Hiroshima.

While trajectory knowledge was substantially corrected by the Arecibo data, a small estimated chance of impact (less than 1:45,000 using standard dynamical models) remained for April 13, 2036.
