Trailer Review: Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania
The Trailer For Quantumania Spoils The Entire Film
The thing about the Quantumania trailer isn’t that it’s not visually cool; it’s that it will probably be disappointing. I’ve repeatedly found with the Ant-Man movies that the concepts and potential visuals never pay off as well as they could. They have this massive sandbox; they don’t use it nearly as much as you’d think. This trailer probably contains some of the most impressive micro-world shenanigans in the film.
The other thing is that the trailer gives away far too much information. We know what Scott’s motivation is, and we know he’s probably not going to achieve it (and gets betrayed during his attempts). The moral is probably that he needs to learn to accept his lost time and enjoy what he has. It’s not like they’ll rewrite big swathes of Marvel canon at this stage.
Quantumania Has A Story That Can’t Go Anywhere
In my mind, the only real reason to watch Quantumania, besides wanting to keep up with Marvel, is that it introduces a new villain. A villain that I’m sure will be the next Thanos (Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is already announced). I haven’t looked into the comic history, but Kang the Conqueror is a name I know. If he has time/reality-warping powers, that’ll be especially interesting because of things we’ve seen in Loki. Ant-Man’s function in the cinematic universe is to help introduce weird sci-fi concepts, and that pattern seems to hold strong once again.
So, the big question: will I see this movie? Yes. If I didn’t know what Marvel was or cared, would I still? Absolutely not. Marvel has done far better trailers with less information and shown cooler stuff.
