The Amazing Spider-Man: Can it Out Web The Original?

The remake of the Spider-Man movies is just another film in the long line of remakes that have been happening over the past few years, and in general, it’s not something that I’m a huge fan of.  We’ve seen it done with War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and so many others. Sometimes the remakes are successful, and other times they aren’t, which is how all movies are really, they can’t all be blockbuster hits. However, the time between remakes of movies now a days makes me uneasy. For example, I still consider The Lord of the Rings films fairly new, but people are already discussing potential remakes. Yes, the movies could have been better, but I am still attached to those films. Is it really necessary to remake them so soon after the trilogy ended?

The same could be said for the new movie The Amazing Spider-Man; the last Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire was only released in 2007, just five short years ago. People, like me, still picture Tobey Maguire as their Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, and for the time they came out in, the special effects used in those three movies were amazing. However, today everything does move faster, and that means digital technology has been dramatically advanced since the first Spider-Man film was released in 2002. So although the actors have changed, along with the story and effects, if you watch the two trailers back-to-back it is obvious how advanced the technology used to make The Amazing Spider-Man is. The costume is sleeker, the city is darker, the colors are more vibrant, and the stunts look out of this world.

The Amazing Spider-Man will be a reboot, meaning that the story will change from the original film; it is not just a sequel, with new actors refilling old parts. It will be like a completely different series altogether. For example, in the reboot Peter Parker will make synthetic webs, like the original comic book, as opposed to organic ones. In addition, Parkers love interest has changed, no longer will he be pining for Mary Jane, because he has upgraded to the cops daughter, Gwen Stacy. However, whether it will top the original comes down to the story, the effects no matter what, will be greater than the original, but in the end it comes down to preference. I believe that The Amazing Spider-Man will be a summer blockbuster, especially with it’s release date being July 3rd, and that it has the potential to pull in more revenue than the past three films, but that doesn’t mean I won’t continue loving the original as well.
