How To Survive In Dead Space 3

Dead Space 3 is the third game in the Dead Space franchise.  It was released in early 2013.  It is a third person shooter with the player usually fighting against necromorphs, undead creatures whose limbs must be dismembered to be killed.  This game is not as scary as the previous games, with more attention put into the story and game play than the atmosphere like in the previous games.

Dead Space 3 featured a lot of overhauls from the previous games.  First off, money was taken away, instead having the player find and use spare parts at work benches.  This makes a lot more sense than finding stores that sell ammunition.  Another big change was the way weapons work.  In the first two Dead Space games, Isaac could find/buy different weapons.  Each one would work in a specific way with two fire modes.  Dead Space 3 turns that on its head by allowing Isaac to put together weapons in different configurations.  Also, ammunition was simplified and made universal for all weapons.

I found that this game was a bit easier than the the previous two, and hard difficulty was really easy for the most part.  I have yet to try the next level, but I will see if there is much of a difference.  If you’re not careful though, necromorphs can easily kill you.  The keys to surviving in Dead Space 3 is to be aware of your surroundings, and as said in the game, aim for the limbs.  If you can do that, then you shouldn’t have any problems.  First, your surroundings are important for the sole reason that vents are everywhere.  This means that necromorphs can come out of them.  If you put your back to a vent and a necromorph jumps out, it will stun you for a moment, allowing for a free hit.  If you’re also fighting necromorphs in front of you, it can be game over.  Try not to let them surround you.  Keep moving or get your back against a solid wall.  Make sure to check the ceiling as well though, because there can be vents there as well.  Running when pressured is almost always a good idea.  You can quickly put some distance between you and the following necromorphs.  The only weapon that is effective at melee range is the hydraulic engine.  For everything else, you will want some distance for maximum effect.

I found that the Evangelizer weapon was the best gun in the game by far.  I got it, I believe with the online pass, though I could be mistaken about that.  It is a semi-automatic carbine equipped with a shotgun (These two weapons are better than their standard military engine counterparts).  At short to mid to longer ranges, the carbine can shred enemies with precision, especially since it has a good fire rate.  Being semi-automatic though forces you to stay more in control of your shots though, so you spend less ammunition and you’re usually more accurate as well.  The shotgun is not effective at melee range.  That is very important to know.  If you don’t miss entirely, you won’t do much damage, only succeeding in knocking the necromorph from its feet (which is not a bad outcome, it just isn’t efficient).  The Evangelizer shotgun (I can’t speak for all shotguns, though I’m sure it’s the same) has a killzone at just the edge of what can be termed short range.  You will want to fire when the enemy is about six feet from Isaac.  Play around with it and you will see what I’m talking about.  The Evangelizer shotgun can kill outright most necromorphs if you hit them in this butter zone.

Of course, each necromorph is different.  For the ones with bladed arms, you should aim at the arms, close to the shoulder.  The little dogs with the three stalks that emerge from their bodies can be killed by severing two stalks.  For the kinds that morph into the legs with the three tentacles, if you’re using the carbine, aim for the arms and head and if it changes aim for the tentacles.  If you’re using the shotgun aim for both legs and you should be able to kill it instantly as long as you aimed well.  The ones that vomit are extremely dangerous if they get close to you, so aim for their legs.  This probably won’t kill them, so then aim for the head.  For the really skinny ones, always aim for the head.  The giant alien necromorphs will hit you for a lot of damage so aim for the small back legs, as this will slow them considerably.  For the fast ones with the large tail, aim for the legs.  Aim for the explosive yellow sac on the necromorphs that carry them.

If you do this, you shouldn’t have any trouble killing the necromorphs as long as your aim is decent.  This will help you conserve ammunition and health as well.  You should end up with a surplus of supplies that only grows as the game progresses.  Have fun and enjoy the story.
