Around the Net (11/21/2014)

Here at Sci-Fi Bloggers, we run a lot of individual pieces on the site, each of them revolving around and focusing on a specific topic. Sometimes, however, we like to crank it up a notch and take a look at a few things at once. With that said, we invite you to follow us as we take a look at what’s happening…AROUND THE NET!

Science Exploration Mash-up

You can find just about any type of video on Youtube, from people spouting long-winded rants about Mass Effect at their camera to controversial clips such as Drunk Girl in Public. One of my personal favorite kinds are when people edit scenes from movies or television (or both) to visually create a new scene.

Reach for the Stars is that kind of video. Recently released by Movieclips, it features a voice-over from the new film Interstellar playing over scenes from several sci-fi films. Some of the movies include Star Trek, Gravity, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Together, they depict an epic journey into space with several exciting clips from each film used. I thought it was a fun video and I recommend giving it a view.

Be a Part of the Latest Dramatic Sci-fi Film!

Walker Walmus is hoping to start production on his new film And Life, described as a raw, emotional, sci-fi-tinged drama. The film follows John Pearson as he struggles to cope with the loss of his twin brother.

The idea for And Life came after the birth of Walmus’ daughter and he began to explore the idea that death is as natural as life. His hope is that the film can shine a light on the “dark subject” of grief and loss so that it may become less taboo to discuss.

In order to create the film, Walmus and his team have begun a Kickstarter campaign to raise production funds. So far, they have over $11,000. The goal is to raise at least $60,000 by December 7 or earlier.

It’s Uncanny

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, November 4 saw the launch of Uncanny, the latest online sci-fi and fantasy magazine. Co-created by Hugo Award-winner Lynne M. Thomas and Hugo Award-nominee Michael Damian Thomas, it is expected to be published bimonthly.

Each issue will feature sci-fi and fantasy related topics such as essays, poems, podcasts and new and classic speculative fiction. Uncanny will be highly interactive and readers are free to submit their own work.

Those who subscribe to Uncanny will be able to view the issue in its entirety while anyone without a subscription can only see the first half. The second half of an issue will be available to non-subscribers, but they’ll have to wait for the first Tuesday of the next month to view it.
