Evil Dead Comes Alive on TV

The epic thrill ride that is the 1981 horror classic The Evil Dead is getting a proper resurrection! Writer and director Sam Raimi as well as producer Rob Tapert will return to the half-hour series entitled Ash vs. Evil Dead, which is expected to run ten episodes in 2015. Also returning to produce and, most importantly, act is star Bruce Campbell.

The Evil Dead was originally released in 1981 and was well-received. It continues to be praised as an engrossing mix of B movie horror and dark comedy. The film is about five college students that head out to the woods to spend a weekend at a cabin, but, inevitably, their plans go awry when demonic forces decide to crash the party. It spawned two sequels. Evil Dead II was released in 1987 and Army of Darkness in 1992. The film was rebooted in 2013, produced by Raimi, Campbell, and Tapert and helmed by Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez. The remake didn’t exactly follow the original, but proved to be a fun-yet-intense gore fest in its own right.

Campbell talked to the Hollywood Reporter about his excitement about the series. “I’m really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide — it’s going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor.”

Tapert and Raimi have worked previously on the Starz network producing the Spartacus series. “Evil Dead has always been a blast,” Raimi mentioned. “Bruce, Rob and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt.”

Raimi dropped by this year’s Comic-Con to break the news about the series. Raimi will direct the pilot as well as co-write with his brother Ivan Raimi. As mentioned, the series is expected to air on Starz in 2015.
