Under the Dome Review: Season One, Episode Six – “The Endless Thirst”
First aired July 29th, 2013.
It’s finally starting to hit the residents of Chester’s Mill that they can run out of supplies, being trapped under the dome. When Barbie (played by Mike Vogel) and Linda (played by Natalie Martinez) discover the lake water is flammable, things begin to fall apart.
First, people fight with the local grocery store when they refuse to go through with any monetary transactions, only bartering. People get impatient and begin throwing cans through windows and assaulting one another to get what they need. Linda and Barbie do what they can do try and calm everyone but soon realize the situation is out of their control. Linda is only moments away from shooting looters when a sudden rainstorm stops everything. Within seconds everyone starts to hug it out and grab buckets to collect the rain.
I’m surprised it took this long for people to start panicking, but it was great to see. It would have been unrealistic that people would continue to act calm and peaceful, especially right after a deadly viral outbreak and nearly being blown up by a missile.
Angie (played by Britt Robertson) manages to escape from Junior (played by Alexander Koch) but things go everywhere but up for her. She runs to the diner she worked at and tells her boss Rose (played by Beth Broderick) everything, but Rose is beaten to death by two local boys who then try to rape Angie. She’s saved by Barbie, but he passes her off to “Big Jim” (played by Dean Norris) who promises to “help” her. Jim offers Angie a deal: if she doesn’t tell anyone what Junior did, he will provide her with anything she needs. She quickly accepts.
Now that Angie’s “kidnapped” story is finally resolved, hopefully there will be good material for her character going forward. It seems Jim is always making deals to his benefit, like one with local farmer, Ollie (played by Leon Rippy), to give him propane in exchange for providing water. Ollie pulls a first and firmly stands up to Jim, leaving the possibility that his character can become a major threat later. Hopefully, the show will let this play out rather than kill Ollie when he starts becoming a great antagonist, similar to Reverend Coggins.
Meanwhile, Julia (played by Rachelle Lefevre) and Dodee (played by Jolene Purdy) are investigating a strange screeching that is blocking radio transmissions. Dodee has built a contraption that can track the source of the noise, thinking that it could potentially be what is powering the dome. When the two go searching, it leads them straight to the seizure twins Joe (played by Colin Ford) and Norrie (played by Mackenzie Lintz). When they both touch the dome together, it turns off the screeching sound and further implies they are connected and possibly powering the dome.
With all the drama happening in this episode, it was good to get more information on the dome, like how it can generate rain. There’s no way that Joe and Norrie are powering the dome, but it’s obvious they are connected to it in some way, a manner involving pink stars. It would definitely hurt the narrative if the show didn’t focus on the dome enough.
Quotes/Thoughts
“You step foot on my land except to bring me more propane, you’ll get a bullet between the eyes. And I always could shoot better than you.”
When snow falls in the dome, it’ll look like a giant snow globe.
“Do you have any idea what will happen if word gets out about those kids?”
Dodee doesn’t look like she can keep a secret.
