TRAILER TALK: Jem and the Holograms

0

By Carly Fjeld on May 21st, 2015

Remember the awesomeness of the animated series Jem? There was pink hair, great makeup and good times. Well, Universal is adapting that into a movie and the trailer just dropped. Take a look!

What the actual f*** was that? I know, I know, everyone on the internet has already ranted about this trailer, but we’ve got to talk about what happened here.

The film is being directed by Jon Chu, who is famous for Never Say Never, the Justin Bieber documentary. That’s fine, it wasn’t a bad film. What’s not okay is taking a beloved series and stripping it of all the fun elements that made it lovable to both boys and girls and blasting it with unoriginal bubblegum bullsh**. Jem, or Jerrica Benton, is a badass who disguises herself via a hologram from a highly sophisticated computer called Synergy. Not only is she trying to protect her identity, but also her friends and orphaned girls who she oversees. You know what the “Jem” in the trailer is dealing with? Being super famous. Boo. Did you see Synergy? Did you see the Jemstar earrings that allow Jerrica to go from CEO to glam rock? That’s because all of it was missing. They didn’t even have the common decency to use a hologram of any sort. Where are The Misfits? THERE ARE NO STAR EARRINGS!

I’ve seen this story before. Friends form a band and nothing can go wrong, then the hit it big and someone (usually a bossy figurehead from the record label) pulls them apart and urges the singer to go solo, which they always do. That’s not conflict for a movie, that’s just a boring retelling of things that happened in other movies. Don’t slap a name on something and call it a reimagining. There was no imagination involved in this.

The film will be released by Universal Pictures on October 23rd of this year. Will you be catching it?
