Trailer Talk: 5 Amazing New Trailers

Trailers are their own unique pieces of art. Sometimes better than the movies/shows they go with. The time restraint forces creativity and efficiency. These five are some of the best I’ve seen lately.  

Strange Worlds:

The appeal of this movie is obvious: the animal designs. I’ve not seen visual creativity like this in a while. They look like Disney-cute cosmic horror monsters. I also like the blend of comedy and nostalgic adventure the trailer hints at. It reminds me of Up mixed with Star Wars.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities:

The title sold me. Del Toro doing a dedicated horror anthology? Yes, please. It boggles the mind we didn’t already have this. The trailer might be simply a montage set to creepy music, but the imagery they chose is fantastic. Anthology shows are almost always uneven, but if only two or three episodes match this trailer’s energy, my review of it will still be glowing.

Black Adam:

I’m not sure I’d like this trailer as much if it wasn’t for Dwayne Johnson being Black Adam. It has the warning signs of another overpowered DC character. The action isn’t as fun when it’s just gods throwing punches while floating. However, even if I’m spot-on with that worry, Dwayne will lend it the fun, charisma, and energy needed to still make it enjoyable. DC bought a lot of goodwill with Shazam! and Wonder Woman—so I’m willing to trust.

The Midnight Club:

This series adapts a book by Christopher Pike. I’ve not read that book. But, from what I understand, Flannigan’s adaptations aren’t usually that accurate, anyway. As for the trailer, I like the spooky vibe and varied cast. I’m all for more child-friendly horror.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes:

There’s a reason The Hunger Games books and movies created the dystopian trend for a while. The trilogy had a gravitas, a potency that stuff like The Maze Runner never could replicate. I still consider the third book one of the most emotionally devastating things I’ve ever read—though that could be nostalgia talking. For this trailer, I like that it tells us so little. It’s just some impressive CGI and interesting bits of text. This, I imagine, is partially to give everyone a chance to read the book—or that they had little footage ready yet.

And there we have it! Five trailers for five cool projects. Some won’t come out until 2023, but I’m still excited for them. It’s a great time to be into nerdy media.
