The Walking Dead: Season Five, Episode Fifteen – “Try”

First Aired March 22nd, 2015.

Deanna (played by Tovah Feldshuh) interviews Glenn (played by Steven Yeun) and Nicholas (played by Michael Traynor) about the disastrous supply run. Glenn tells her the truth while Nicholas tries to pin the deaths on Glenn saying Rick’s group is dangerous.

Deanna already lost trust in Rick’s group after her conversation with Father Gabriel (played by Seth Gilliam) and now the death of her son has shaken it more. Glenn tells Nicholas that he won’t go on supply runs anymore because his cowardly nature will continue getting people killed. Nicholas goes to the woods and gets the gun that Rick (played by Andrew Lincoln) hid when he first got to Alexandria. Carol (played by Melissa McBride) confirms to Rick that Jessie’s (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) husband, Pete (played by Corey Brill), is hitting her. When Rick tells Deanna, she reveals she knew all along but never took action because the community needed Pete’s skills as a doctor. She rejects his suggestion of killing Pete because that’s not how a civilized society works. Rick goes to Jessie and offers protection, which she at first refuses but, after they acknowledge their growing feelings for each other, she accepts. However, Pete comes home and gets into a vicious fight with Rick that spills out into the street.

I don’t know what Glenn was thinking bringing Nicholas back to town instead of just shooting him like he deserved. I still prefer Carol be the person to take out Pete but after seeing how bad he is I could care less who does it. I just want him to die horribly. Turns out when Rick first saw Pete smoking on his porch, he had just finished beating Jessie unconscious while her son hid in the closet. Apparently Deanna’s idea of a civilized society excludes murder but spousal abuse is perfectly fine. I understand overlooking someone’s faults because they’re useful for the community but I can’t believe Deanna would let something like that slide. Rick and Jessie had chemistry ever since that sexually charged haircut she gave him. I like them together but, frankly, she’d be better off with almost anyone. That fight was awesome but with the backwards logic of Deanna and the citizens of Alexandria they might be rooting for Pete instead of Rick.

Meanwhile, in the woods, Michonne (played by Danai Gurira) and Rosita (played by Christian Serratos) are tracking Sasha (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) who is obsessively hunting walkers. Sasha reeling from the loss of Noah (played by Tyler James Williams) because she told him that he wouldn’t survive. They take on a large group of walkers which triggers PTSD reactions in Michonne and emotionally exhausted Sasha goes back to town. Carl (played by Chandler Riggs) is spending time with Enid (played by Katelyn Nacon). She also spends time in the woods to escape the confinement of Alexandria and they bond over shared experiences outside in the world. Daryl (played by Norman Reedus) and Aaron (played by Ross Marquand) notice more walkers have been coming into the area. They also find a woman who was tied to a tree and eaten alive by walkers, with a “W” carved into her forehead.

I’m more interested in Michonne’s PSTD rather than Sasha. After all these seasons, Sasha doesn’t seem like a real character and this storyline is just present to give her screen time. That’s also why Rosita tagged along with Michonne, because she hasn’t had dialogue for the last few episodes. Carl found love in the apocalypse. He better enjoy it while it lasts because more often than not one half of a pair ends up dead. I’m really intrigued about who these “W” people are and how they are going to factor into the season finale. With all the infighting going on in Alexandria they could easily stage an attack (not that it wasn’t already easy). Of course they could be the thing that finally wakes up the citizens of Alexandria to the harsh reality of the world.

The fight attracts most of the town and eventually Rick beats Pete and threatens to kill him if he touches Jessie again. When Deanna orders Rick to stop he takes out his gun and rants about how Alexandria won’t last with their way of thinking. When Deanna insinuates Rick may be kicked out of town he starts verbally assaulting her until Michonne steps in and knocks him unconscious. Rick has been suffering from his own PTSD and the complacent nature of everyone finally pushed him over the edge. Also, Deanna siding with a wife beater over Rick must have been outrageous to him. I think he would have taken a shot at her. Michonne knocking out Rick was smart because it makes it so he not only stopped him but left everyone with the impression that Rick’s group as a whole could fit in.

Quotes & Thoughts

“Who the hell do you think you are?” “Someone who’s trying not to kill you.”

Rick should learn a trade so people will let him stay in town even if they think he’s crazy.

“People like you are supposed to be dead, but these walls went up just in time so you’re not.”

With all the drama and trouble that’s going to go down in the finale, I’m betting at least three major characters will die.
