The New Ghostbusters Are Here

0

By Carly Fjeld on February 10th, 2015

The proton packs will return in the summer of 2016 and now we know some of the names attached to Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot.

After speculation and heated internet debates, four names have been revealed. No real surprise that SNL’s Kristen Wiig and former costar Melissa McCarthy are teaming up again with Feig after the trio’s success with Bridesmaids, the film that catapulted Wiig and McCarthy into starring roles in the film world. Wiig has gone on to star in some indie roles like Girl Most Likely and The Skeleton Twins. McCarthy has been everywhere it seems. There was Identity Thief, The Heat, last year’s Tammy, and received praise for her recent work in St. Vincent with Ghostbusters OG Bill Murray.

Joining them are two current featured players from Saturday Night Live, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. McKinnon is well known for impersonations of Justin Bieber and Ellen DeGeneres. She will appear in Sisters with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and will lend her voice to the big screen adaptation of Angry Birds, based on the mobile game. Jones recently became a featured cast member at SNL, but has been a writer for the show since early 2014. She can currently be seen in Chris Rock’s Top Five.

The film is eyeing a summer shoot so the film can be ready to premiere by July 22nd, 2016. Kate Dippold (The Heat, MadTV) has teamed up with Feig to produce a screenplay.

The internet has erupted with concern for the film. Of course, it’s alright to be wary that the modern state of Hollywood may ruin one of your favorite franchises of all time. It’s a bummer that the original characters were not able to make a comeback, but the new cast isn’t the end of the world. It’s in good hands, so if you choose not to see a movie specifically because it has been reimagined with a predominantly female cast, then that’s your, very silly and outdated, prerogative.
