The George Lucas

Yes all is explained, the history, the fame and his overall unsuccessful career. ; ) So if you like GL then keep reading, the force lie’s the strongest of those who do.

It’s rare to have a director so famous and popular by one theme of story. So much so that he doesn’t really have to do any other films. But if popularity hasn’t dwindled why create something totally new, right? Yes the only time you’re likely to see Mr Lucas name is usually before those two magic words crop up, accompanied by John Williams masterful score.

Star Wars has been widely considered as the most successful film franchise of all time. Though this could seem far-fetched to some, it is not far from the truth, its popularity is still as present as it was when it first came around, if not more (due to all the video games including the MMO etc.) People can’t seem to get enough.

When he first started out with the films, he was reportedly at a loose end, in terms of having supervisory/full control over some of the departments. He was determined to get the look he was going for and after much conversation and paper work; he had almost complete control, not only over some directing, but many other areas. If he didn’t have that degree of freedom, to get his vision across we could have been watching a very different Star Wars.

He had much of the input with the sound and music’s delivery, and the special effects, which for the time were considered as quite a feat, in itself. Such effects were almost alien to many of the visual team and never really attempted in such an extensive fashion. Certainly the opposite of the large and often ridiculous amount of effects we see in today’s movies.

Having had permission to go ahead with the visual requests and though many still sceptical, George obviously never lost sight of the vision and goal he had. There were many ways in which certain aspects, could have been altered and changed or stayed the same, making the series worse or lesser in overall quality. In a parallel universe Star Wars is probably the biggest flop of all time, though probably a success in many. But in the end it was down to the rare freedom given, perhaps a bit of luck, collaboration and the agreements/understanding of a series of people, that led to the great features we see today. Goes without saying, but I’m saying it anyway, a true visionary and talent. Can you imagine what it would be like if Lucas wasn’t involved as much?
