The Best Edge of Eternities Cards (Part 1 of 5)

This is part 1 of a list of the best 35 cards in the latest Magic: The Gathering set, Edge of Eternities. The articles are meant to be read in order, so start with this one if you want the full list. Cards are presented in WUBRG order and alphabetically within each color.

Hope you’re having fun playing the set!

Beyond the Quiet

It’s not the best “exile everything” spell that Standard has seen, but Beyond the Quiet will become a staple of any WU control deck, and will be multiple copies in that deck. I don’t feel like I need to explain why.

Emergency Eject

I debated putting this Edge of Eternities card on the list, but there are two crucial aspects to it that make it a very good card. One is that it hits everything but lands. In a control deck, having that level of flexibility is crucial. And the second thing is that it’s an Instant, meaning you can get that advantage on the opponent’s end step.

Lightstall Inquisitor

Making your opponent go down a card for an extra turn is useful enough, though not that powerful—but it’s the fact that ability is on a one-drop, with Vigilance, and the card has more than one power that really makes it shine. Any aggro deck running white wants this card.

Scout for Survivors

I love little effects like this. I don’t know what deck will use it, but we’ve literally just talked about a creature that can be very impactful if brought back at the right time. Also, a little power boost isn’t bad either for your newly revived swarm.

Consult the Star Charts

Another control all-star of a card from Edge of Eternities. It’s good at every stage of the game, can be a quick end-of-turn move, or a way to search deep for whatever you need when you have more mana. I expect most blue decks to run a full four of this card.

Quantum Riddler

This hits in the air. This draws cards. And if you’re in a position where you really need to draw into something, like say Beyond the Quiet or Emergency Eject, it’ll help you dig deeper. If you time it right, you can play this on a light hand for its Warp, get two cards, then, on the following turn, play it for its full cost, and get two more cards. I am amazed at the stuff control has gotten in Edge of Eternities.

Unravel

This is a normal little counter spell a lot of the time, but if you counter someone who’s trying to Warp—or cheat something in some other way—you draw a card. There are a lot of edge cases to this card that I think really elevate it above how powerful it seems to be. And it already seems pretty powerful.

We’re looking at seven more Edge of Eternities cards on Monday! Hope to see you there!
