This is part 5 of a list of the best 25 cards in the latest Magic: The Gathering set, Aetherdrift. The articles are meant to be read in order, so start with the first one if you want the full list. Cards are presented in WUBRG order and alphabetically within each color.

Gastal Thrillseeker

Very good in a “Start your engines” aggro deck. Maybe the Aetherdrift RDW build I thought of with Hazoret will splash for black. This card ensures you’ll get to engine level two and has a good stat line. It also remains decent in the mid-game as a card your opponent doesn’t want to block.

Mendicant Core, Guidelight

This goes in that affinity deck I keep mentioning. It’s cheap, hits hard, and has a great payoff for late game. I wish it wasn’t legendary, but—as is often the case in these Aetherdrift articles—that would be very, very unfair.

Veteran Beastrider

Solid little aggro threat that can go in a few different decks. Also a knight, which can be relevant. I don’t have a ton to say about this Aetherdrift card, but that’s just because it’s generically good.

Voyage Home

The Aetherdrift affinity deck builds itself at this point. Do you know the card Thoughtcast? This is just a slightly different version of that card. At least Voyage Home isn’t an instant. That would be messed up. 

Ticket Tortoise

The only colorless artifact that seems any good in Aetherdrift. It lets you catch up if you’re behind, and can usually trade with any early-turn creature. I see this as a fringe control card that might see sideboard play.

And we did it! Another set reviewed! Since I started writing these Aetherdrift articles, I’ve been really focusing in on trying different Rakdos builds. Hazoret has so much potential, and I keep wanting to make it work. Even if that’s not the line in the end, though, I think Aetherdrift is going to give birth to some delightfully fun new decks. If you haven’t started brewing ideas yet, I think now is the perfect time to start.
