The Best Aetherdrift Cards (3 of 5)

0

By Brandon Scott on February 19th, 2025

Aetherdrift

This is part 3 of a list of the best 25 cards in the latest Magic: The Gathering set, Aetherdrift. The articles are meant to be read in order, so start with the first one if you want the full list. Cards are presented in WUBRG order and alphabetically within each color.

Hope you’re having fun playing the set!

Momentum Breaker

If this card had flash, it would be the absolute all-star of Aetherdrift. As it stands, this is a useful little removal spell that can also gain you life. It being an enchantment also has a lot of niche benefits that make it an even better card.

Adrenaline Jockey

Exhaust annoys me as a mechanic because of how much tracking it takes, but this is still a good payoff for using that ability. That’s not the part I care most about, though. Four damage is such a good deterrent that your opponent will hold back spells, but also end up in awful spots where they have no choice but to get hit.

Hazoret, Godseeker

Well, Aetherdrift has a template for its RDW list. Start with four of these and at least two other playsets that can easily “start your engines.” I don’t think I need to explain how good this is at every level. Even on the turns you can’t use Hazoret, you can make sure one of your other tiny creatures gets in the needed damage.

Howlsquad Heavy

This might go in the same deck as Hazoret. That’s a lot of abilities on one creature. It’s not even legendary or anything. It helps get your engine count up, keeps up tempo and damage, works with other goblins, and makes X-spells a viable finisher. Seriously, this card seems pushed.

Magmakin Artillerist

I played Magic during the cycling deck days. I remember what it’s like to have a card that pays that mechanic off. And this one isn’t even specific to cycling. Any discarding does damage. Do you know how many cards that is in Standard? This may seem like an underwhelming Aetherdrift card, but I expect to see it do something amazing.

We’ve got a different review article between now and the next five cards, so return next Wednesday!
