Dark Harvest is a novella from 2006 I oopsed into reading because I wanted something short and spooky for October—and then only finished it a few days ago. And now, having discovered that it’s getting a film adaptation that appears to be trapped in some bureaucratic/logistical hell and will come out eventually, it seemed a perfect book to give a review.
Much has been said, no doubt, about the social satire inherent to Severance. It’s the most immediate aspect of the show—and only continues to become more aggressive as the series continues. But I am not the reviewer to talk about its accuracy to either the feelings inherent to such a type of work or the setting’s accuracy.
Last Friday Fiction, I said you’d get a “classic horror story” A classic horror story, in this case, means a truly gory cosmic horror tale with some gnarly (but mostly implied) body horror.
I went into Crypt of the Moon Spider not knowing two important things about it. The first is that it’s not a monster story, not really. It’s a medical horror book tinged with cosmic horror elements.
It’s been a little while since our last horror tale, has it not? Something brutal, spooky, or nightmarish hasn’t graced our Friday Fiction section since (arguably) we found out what a “reverse werewolf” curse was.
Well, that changes with this short tale entitled “Chalk Drawings of Monsters.”
Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer (I’m shortening that to Lucky Girl) is a story that purports to be about Krampus. It’s not really. Its genre is horror—but it’s almost never scary. And the tagline about a person becoming a horror writer is a portal to so many other issues I’ll rant about later.
Dear reader, oh, our dear readers, the following tale doesn’t fit into any single genre. It is a fantasy tale, in a medieval land, yes. And there’s a strange type of magic that anyone can spontaneously have, for certain. That is fantastical. No arguing about that.
I Found a Circus Tent in the Woods Behind My House is a stark contrast to the first book in the “I Found Horror” series. It’s technically the second book, but was published first. I’m unsure of why it’s set up that way, except perhaps to give a better starting impression.
What is the opposite of a standard werewolf curse? In the average story, you get bitten by a werewolf and turn into one every full moon. Care to take a guess what’s different about this one?
