Before Star Wars There Was The Old Republic

Before A New Hope, Before Episode 1, there was The Old Republic.

The video games Knights of the Old Republic (Bioware), KOTOR 2 (Obsidian) and Star Wars: The Old Republic (Bioware), take place roughly 3000 to 4000 years before Star Wars: Episode 1. They tell the rich history of the battle between the Jedi and Sith with the engaging and quality storytelling that we’re used to from the original trilogy.

These stories have depth, intrigue and sophistication without sacrificing the action, adventure and character development we’ve come to know and love. They fully respect the Star Wars lore and franchise. If you’re a fan, and you haven’t played them, we highly recommend it.

“For over a thousand generations the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in The Old Republic.” – Obi Wan Kenobi

Here now are the key stories of the time to which Master Obi Wan refers.

SPOILERS FOR THE GAMES Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II (a.k.a. KOTOR and KOTOR II). If you haven’t played them and would like to, check them out on Steam, the App Store or Google Play.

300 Years Later …

Star Wars: The Old Republic picks up about 300 years after KOTOR II and continues the story of Revan across the various characters you can play as in the game but particularly the Jedi Knight.

The 12 short videos below comprise the prelude to that game as created by Bioware. They chronicle the revised history of the war between the Sith and the Jedi narrated by Master Gnost-Dural, keeper of the Jedi records.

From Bioware:

Welcome to the Jedi Archives

All dates have been adjusted to match the system adopted by the Galactic Senate in the wake of the recent peace agreement between the Republic and Sith Empire.

  • ATC – After the Treaty of Coruscant
  • BTC – Before the Treaty of Coruscant

Detailed holorecords for each event will come online as they are researched and recorded by Archivist Master Gnost-Dural. Available records are indicated by illuminated nodes. Please monitor standard frequencies for notification about the availability of new holorecords.

Note: On the SWTOR website, these videos appear in order backwards in time from the present into the past. We’ve placed them in date order of the events in history with the exception of the first video that introduces the series. If you’d like to see them in their original order, start with the first video, then go from the bottom and work your way back up.

Continue the story and put your personal mark on galactic history by creating your own character in Star Wars: The Old Republic! Get a free armor set (until March 2018) for every character you create by clicking this link even if you already play the game.

If you would like to have the most direct relevance to the stories above, and especially KOTOR and KOTOR II, we recommend playing the Jedi Knight story first, though the Sith Warrior also has relevance as does the expansion Shadow of Revan, playable by all characters from level 51 on up.

Enjoy!
