SeventhSanctum.com-Inspiration For Fantasy Writers

0

By Vulcon on August 2nd, 2012

SeventhSanctum.com is a website that hosts contests and contains many different random generators for establishing characters, setting, and more, mostly with a fantasy angle to it.  Pictured above is the homepage.  It contains the blog, which gives information on contests coming up, as well as the results of finished contests.  In the middle of the page on the right side is where you can find information about the site, etc.  However, it is the top right of the screen, the generators, that are what most people come to the site for.

The generators are divided into sixteen different major categories.  Each of these has smaller sub-categories within it, and these contain the actual random generators.  For instance, the “Characters” category contain the general characters, animal-huminoids, for the fans, specific characters, and miscellaneous sub-categories.  The general characters sub-category contains the general character generator, quick character generator, character scrambler, and history scrambler.  Using the general character generator without any specifications, my first result was:

This gentleman puts you in mind of a busy bee. He has large brown eyes that are like two acorns. His thick, straight, neck-length hair is the color of yellowed ivory, and is worn in a weird style. He is tall and has a broad-shouldered build. His skin is tan. He has a high forehead and prominent cheekbones. His wardrobe is bizarre and classy, with a mostly black color scheme.

The most helpful generators for me have been the name and character generators.  Names can be really hard to come up with, and having an almost endless supply of names ready to be mixed and matched can be incredibly useful.  The character descriptions that the generators can come up with can be very detailed and give you a blueprint to start working with, rather than having to start from scratch.

It is possible to get some really useful ideas from this site.  Not all of the generators are serious, a lot of them are just for fun.  But, using the generators can get rid of that pesky writer’s block, and I’ve found that by combining the aspects that I liked or found interesting from several results, I can create something that can either inspire me, or jump-start whatever it is I’m working on.  It’s fun and I almost always spend more time on it than I intend to.  If you’re a writer, I would recommend checking it out, whether you need inspiration, want to participate in a contest or just for a few laughs.
