Pacific Rim Aims to Destroy Theaters This Summer

Giant monster films aren’t a staple of American culture. Past attempts to bring the Kaiju (giant monster) genre back to life, such as the 1998 Godzilla reboot and the 2008 Cloverfield, did little. While both films were large financial successes, neither spawned a sequel and left many fans disappointed. But Guillermo del Toro is looking to change the west’s opinion on giant monsters with his tried and true Kaiju formula film Pacific Rim.

In Del Toro’s own words, “Pacific Rim will be a beautiful poem to giant monsters.” Set in the near future, humanity is on the brink of destruction as giant monsters begin to rise from the depths of the sea and cause untold destruction. In order to combat the threat, giant robots called Jaegars, controlled by two pilots who are linked mentally to the machine, do their best to defend humanity. However, even the Jaegars seem to do little to stop the rampaging beasts. It falls to two unlikely heroes to pilot a thought to be obsolete Jaegar and end the conflict.

Everything about this film is shaping up to be a giant monster fans dream. Industrial Light and Magic will be providing special effects for the film, of which there are bound to be many. Ramin Djawadi, whose best work includes the scores for Iron Man and the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, has been signed on to do the music. Combine this with an Oscar award winning director and a picture perfect Kaiju storyline and Pacific Rim looks to be prepared to fire on all cylinders.

At Comic Con 2012 the first footage of the film was screened for the lucky 6,000 people crowded into the Warner Brothers/ Legendary Pictures panel. Toro described his film as essentially “robo-porn”. He described that there would be at least a half dozen original monster creations and just as many variations of Jaegars to combat them.
