Gears of War 3 was released in late 2011. It is the final part of the Gears of War trilogy and certainly delivered what everyone was expecting out of it. It has a lot of content for players who favor different kinds of play. It introduced the all new beast mode, brought back an updated horde mode, along with multiplayer and up to four player co-op campaign.
Horde mode is a game mode that pits you against 50 waves of Locust. Each wave will differ, and they will get harder from 1 to 10. Then they will restart but the Locust will receive a buff, for example double health. Up to five players can cooperate together, but how to go about it?
First of all, the map you choose is very important. You need to pick a map that has an easily defensible position. The best map for horde that I’ve found is Overpass. The center of the map is a raised area with only path the enemy can come from. There are well placed defenses as well. By building spike caltrops at the top of the first set of stairs, it creates a perfect, cheap, chokepoint for the nearby turret to annihilate anything except for bosses. I recommend sticking with the first level of turret because ammo and repairs are really cheap and the enemies are close enough that the poor aim on it isn’t a problem. It does a lot more damage than the second level, so don’t upgrade it. There is also a turret behind the area with the first turret that you can fall back to if need be. The silverback is also located in this position. It can even be positioned as a another turret, though it is much more expensive to repair.
Wave after wave of enemies will come up to stairs to be mowed down by the turret. It’s pretty simple. On boss waves move out of the base so that the boss doesn’t just destroy everything. On these waves it’s good to have more teammates, otherwise you could have a really tough time. It is doable, however. Just keep an eye on your money. By the time you get halfway through the waves, you will have a lot of money, especially if you’re playing alone. Ammo isn’t as big of a concern if you’re using the turret as well. Just keep the enemies at those stairs and everything will turn out fine. Just try not to get too many expenses by building expensive things that just get destroyed like high level barriers and sentry turrets.
If you still can’t beat horde mode, then unlock the super reload modifier for horde and you should be able to destroy everything no problem. I suggest using a gun like the lancer, as this will annihilate anything quickly and has enough ammo to give you a lot of extra shots. It’s a lot more efficient than something like the boomshot.
