How To Survive Diablo 3

The world of Diablo 3 can be a pretty scary place, with all its betrayals, shady merchants and let’s not forget countless demon invasions. Thankfully with this handy guide at your side you might just stand a chance against the Lord of Terror and his minions.

One stat to rule them all

Each class in Diablo 3 uses one of the three main stats in the game, strength, dexterity, or intelligence, as their primary stat. This primary stat ups your damage in addition to the other benefits it provides. All your gear should have large amounts of your main stat to increase your damage significantly. Though the other stats do provide various bonuses, such as Intelligence providing extra resistance or strength granting extra armor, pure damage outweighs these benefits. Items with extra stats in addition to your primary is just icing on the cake, with possibly vitality being the only exception.

Feel the rainbow

Gems and jewel crafting become increasingly important as your progress through the game. Each main stat has a corresponding gem type, such as rubies for strength. These gems can be placed in armor or weapons to increase various stats, the effect varies depending on the item you put it on. Use your gems early and often. As soon as gems begin to drop and you acquire some items with sockets, place a gem in it. Some players may want to be stingy, saving their gems for extra good items to use them. This however, will hurt you more than help. As you conquer difficulties better and better gems will drop, making your hoard of flawed rubies very quickly obsolete. Use them while you can, and once they stop being useful or you find new gear you can simply remove the gem from the item for a relatively cheap fee. Old gems can even be saved and transformed into new and greatly improved versions. Find some gems with your main stat or vitality and trick out your gear, you won’t be disappointed.

Rubies are your friend

My third tip brings the two previous points together. You want more points in your main stat to increase your damage, and you want to use gems to further improve your character. For weapons, I find that the best gems to use are rubies, regardless of what class you are playing. When placed in a weapon ruby’s grant you a straight damage increase, which in turns increases the damage of many of your abilities. This will give you the large damage boost you need to survive on the higher difficulties of the game.

With these helpful hints you will be slicing your way through waves of demons with (relative) ease. Until you get to Inferno difficulty. Then it’s best to step back, take a deep breath, and brace yourself for the sudden terrible impact that is almost constant death. Welcome to Diablo.
