FINALE: 12 Monkeys – “Arms of Mine”

First Aired April 10th, 2015.

Cole (played by Aaron Stanford) and Cassandra (played by Amanda Schull) beat and interrogate Aaron (played by Noah Bean) for information on the 12 Monkeys. Aaron escapes but causes a huge fire and becomes trapped, forcing Cole and Cassandra to leave him to burn to death.

Cole and Cassandra track down Jennifer (played by Emily Hampshire) who now owns the Markridge Corporation for information about her mystery investor. The investor is Ramse (played by Kirk Acevedo) who is financing construction of the time machine in 2015 in order to return to his son in the future. Monkeys member Olivia (played by Alisen Down) tends to a group babies nicknamed the Twelve. They are meant to start the next “cycle” of the Monkeys’ plan twenty-eight years in the future. Meanwhile, in 2043, Jones (played by Barbara Sukowa) is preparing to defend the facility against Deacon (played by Todd Stashwick). He is working with the Twelve who want the time machine and together they launch an assault on the facility.

Aaron decided to become a double agent and he literally got burned. Irony is a funny thing. Jennifer is still as crazy as ever and I can imagine working in an office with her as the boss must be a real trip.

I can only assume those twelve babies grew up to be the next generation of the Monkeys, born from each of the current members. Olivia can’t have been too happy with the assignment of raising a dozen newborns, that’s a lot of diapers. Although I’m curious what happened to these children during the decades they grew up that made them walk around like members of the Blue Man Group.

In 2015, Cole and Cassandra track down Ramse as he prepares to use the newly constructed time machine to return to the future. Cole tries to talk Ramse down until Cassandra enters the lab and they all find themselves in a Mexican standoff. Ramse denies that he is the Witness but Cassandra doesn’t believe him. Cassandra is talked down by Cole but she starts a shootout that leaves her and Ramse shot. Cassandra is bleeding internally and is slowly dying in Cole’s arms, but Ramze offers a plan that might save her. He gives Cassandra the time traveling drug and tells Cole to send her to 2043 so Jones can treat her. Cole puts Cassandra in the machine and sends her to the future before helping the wounded Ramse out of the facility.

Cassandra has become very coldhearted compared to the start of the season, her transformation into a tough fighter makes her a better character.

If Ramse really isn’t the Witness it has to be someone else from the future who would have all of that same knowledge.

Sending Cassandra to 2043 will do a lot to serve the series’ narrative going into season two. It puts a reverse spin on the fish out of water aspect Cole had being in the past. Also, since Cole isn’t capable of traveling through time anymore, Cassandra’s presence there helps keep the future characters relevant to the main narrative.

Deacon and the Twelve enter the chamber and find Jones has attached a bomb the time machine. She demands that her associates be allowed to leave unharmed in exchange for the machine. Once Jones gives up the machine to the Twelve, Cassandra arrives from the future.

Cassandra went from one bad situation to another, which is as bad as luck can get. Jones must have also been kicking herself that she surrendered her facility thinking her role in the mission was over. They’re both in a tight spot and it won’t be easy to get out of it, but then again if it was that wouldn’t be interesting television.

I bet in addition to Unicorns, Jennifer will also to launch campaigns to save Hippogriffs, Mermaids and Bigfoot.
