Fear the Walking Dead Season Finale

First Aired October 2nd, 2016.

Travis (played by Cliff Curtis) is locked up after his violent outburst over Madison’s (played by Kim Dickens) objections. Oscar (played by Andres Londono) is badly injured and taken to be looked at by his brother Andres (played by Raul Casso)

Strand (played by Colman Domingo) says they need to let the others exile Travis in order to stay in the hotel, and Alicia (played by Alycia Debnam-Carey) suggests they leave with Travis. Strand refuses to leave the safety of the hotel and Elena (played by Karen Bethzabe) gives them until the next morning to leave. Nick (played by Frank Dillane) continues to try to convince Luciana (played by Danay Garcia) to leave the community but she resolves to stay and fight. Alejandro (played by Paul Calderon), now visibly sick, rallies the community to defend themselves from Marco (played by Alejandro Edda) and his gang as Nick leaves. Oscar has swelling in his brain, and, despite Andres’ efforts, he dies of his injuries that night. Andres and Hector (played by Ramses Jimenez) attack Travis. Andres is about to shoot him when Alicia stabs and kills him. Strand drives the others away with a gun and Madison, Travis, and Alicia flee the hotel while Strand stays behind.

Luciana didn’t want to dampen the spirit of everyone and kept up Alejandro’s facade, but they shouldn’t keep living in their bubble. Especially if they are going to be fighting to the death. They at least deserve to know the truth about the man they’re fighting for. Madison went from leading everyone at the hotel to being exiled. Talk about a fall from the top. Madison and the others just leaving the hotel would have been anticlimactic. Fighting their way out made for a much more exciting scene. Strand wanting to stay behind at the beginning of the episode was a dick move considering what he’s been through with them, but self-preservation won out. But it made no sense that he would stay behind after he helped them escape and held the others at gunpoint. There’s no way to spin that positively, and he likely ended up thrown out anyway (or locked up).

Nick returns to the community and sits with Alejandro as his fever gets worse. Nick tries to convince Alejandro that they have to run. Nick saw a helicopter landing in a camp nearby and resolves to lead the people there with Luciana. Madison, Travis, and Alicia go to the warehouse, but find it abandoned. Madison finds the bodies of the people Marco interrogated for the community’s location and decides to find it (and Nick). Marco and his gang arrive at the community and find it abandoned. But Alejandro remained behind; he moves the bus keeping the walkers out of the community. Marco and his men are forced to run as a large horde of walkers flood the town. Meanwhile, Nick and Luciana lead everyone north to where Nick saw the helicopter. Madison, Travis, and Alicia arrive at the community but find only the horde of walkers which now include Marco and his gang. They find Alejandro, who tells them Nick left for the border before he dies.

Nick took on a big role stepping up to lead all those people. Though it was a dangerous plan considering he’s moving such a large group out in the open. Why did Nick think a helicopter meant that place was safe? Things are almost never what they seem in this new world, and that’s a lesson Nick might learn sooner than later. Madison wanting to find Nick is understandable, but he made it clear he wants nothing to do with them and she can’t force him to be with them. Alejandro might have the record for the longest time between being bitten and dying, maybe he was slightly immune to the effects after all. Considering this was a season finale, it would have been more fun to see an action-packed showdown with Marco. The way they died was still good, but not getting the satisfaction of seeing it did sour the overall effect.

While leading the group, Nick again spots the helicopter, and deduces it’s leaving from a refugee camp. However, a group of men open fire and everyone scatters. In the ensuing chaos, Luciana is shot and injured. The episode ends with Nick and Luciana being captured and beaten by the men. All law enforcement is dead in the zombie apocalypse, but, apparently, the border patrol is still up and running. It’s likely these are also the same people who took Ofelia (played by Mercedes Mason) last episode. We won’t know for sure until season three, and I, for one, can’t wait.

Quotes/Thoughts

“I had the chance to kill myself. I chose not to. I wouldn’t die for him and I’m not dying for any of you.”

Madison alluded that she may have killed someone before the apocalypse. Which explains how she’s seemed so adept at surviving this new world.

“I’m not sorry that they’re dead.” “You shouldn’t be, they deserved it.”

Nick was the leader of his people for less than a day, and already they’re either dead or lost to the wind.
