Doctor Who: “Listen”

This is the episode that I’ve been waiting for. Despite the plot holes, “Listen” was the best episode so far in Capaldi’s tenure as the Doctor.

What if we’re never really alone? Personally, I’ve never been afraid of something under the bed (maybe under my car at night, but that was because there was some kind of serial murderer where I lived back in the 90s who would wait under the car and attack women by cutting a vein in their ankle), so I didn’t really relate to this dream that everyone in the history of ever has had.

After a truly embarrassing attempt at dating, Clara and the Doctor set off to find that moment in her past when she had the dream about something under her bed. Except she got distracted and ended up meeting Dan (Rupert when he was little) as he encountered something under the bed.

So if this whole episode meant nothing, if there wasn’t really anything under the bed (except Clara under the baby Doctor’s bed), what was under Rupert’s covers? Could this tie into the mystery of the season? Because, you know, we already have Missy. We got a very tiny, blurry glimpse of this thing and it looked (to me) like a dwarf lizard child.

Orson Pink is someone from Clara’s future, around one hundred years ahead, and he looks exactly like Danny. Clara Oswin Oswald has to be the great grandmother of Orson, but if she is, why doesn’t Orson remember her? He talks about how time traveling “runs in the family,” a joke from his great grandmother’s stories. Obviously that’s Clara, but, even if she was really old, how would he not recognize her? He knows that Clara and the Doctor are time travelers.

He also knows that her name is CLARA. Something’s fishy. (It would help support the Clara is Missy theory!)

Jenna Coleman (Clara) will not confirm nor deny if this is her last season because it will ruin the finale. Companion departures are usually really heartbreaking and complicated. Did this episode set the stage for her departure?

Because, if I’m being honest, I’m ready for Clara to leave.
