Darkwave: Edge of the Storm–Review

Darkwave: Edge of the Storm opens with David (played by Robin Kirwan, Reciever, Rocket Man) and Sarah (played by Nathalie Cox, Jumper, Juno Eclipse) driving down a desolate road late at night on the run from the Ministry with their son.

In this future, star crystals have enabled people to travel faster than the speed of light. But an event known as the “Darkwave” damaged the crystals. Now millions are stranded all throughout space. Among those lost is Sarah’s father Captain Anderson (played by Shane Rimmer, Thunderbirds, Space 1999). The Ministry is after their son because he is “special” and could have some connection with the star crystals. Tired and in need of supplies, David stops at an abandoned outpost to scavenge, and the family gets more than they bargained for.

Written and directed by Darren Scales, Darkwave: Edge of the Storm has a solid story and I was captivated by the characters. However, the way the narrative was set up it felt like the movie was started 20 minutes before I tuned in. What makes David and Sarah’s son so “special” to the Ministry and how does that relate to these star crystals? What were the motives behind the Ministry and what sort of things had they done that made them evil?

The ending was great, but it felt inconclusive and left me wanting more (don’t worry, no spoilers ahead). What felt like the start of an action-packed ending turned out to be the abrupt ending to the film. It was a little reminiscent of the now infamous series finale of The Sopranos. It’s always good to leave the audience wanting more, but with a film you want that sense of closure to the story. Although, if  there’s more to come in the series than the ending was perfect for setting up a sequel.

Overall, Darkwave was a good sci-fi short that fans of the genre will appreciate, it’s a compelling story about a family’s struggle to survive.
