Another Tolkien Film Rakes Up Big Numbers!
While The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues to reign at cinemas, another Tolkien-inspired film soars to the skies of success (I’m not apologizing for my abundant abuse of awful alliteration)! A new independent film, Rise of the Fellowship, has been a runaway hit this holiday season, and it doesn’t look like its trend is stopping any time soon.
From Phase 4 Films, the studio that will soon be bringing us Curse of the Dragon Slayer, comes a movie that puts a new spin on the concepts of the acclaimed fantasy franchise. It features The Lord of the Rings Online as an integral part of its plot, telling of a group of friends embarking on an epic journey to find a new world they have only heard of. During their quest, they encounter many dangerous obstacles and threats. a few unlikely allies, and, after losing one of their most precious possessions, must display depths of bravery and heroism they never thought possible.
The film is not only selling big in retail stores across the country, but is also holding strong in the Top 40 films streaming on Amazon, competing against big studio fare like The Wolverine and Despicable Me 2, and climbing each week, attesting to the powerful nature of a solid independent feature. It has already surpassed movies one might assume would be more popular, like One Direction: This Is Us and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, starring Casey Affleck (listen, I’m not a fan of the band or Affleck, but I can’t deny what a brand name can bring in terms of popularity).
