There’s a dance happening in the Marvel Universe, a “will they/won’t they?” of sorts. There’s a coveted role up for grabs, and whispers have been heard. The character of Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange is a difficult one. He’s egotistical and intense and that has to translate as likable on screen. Who can pull off that?
The standalone film is expected in 2016 and will be directed by horror aficionado Scott Derrickson. The writing team behind the recent Conan the Barbarian film Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, as well as Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts, will convert the comics.
As always, there are loads of rumors as to who could take on the massive responsibility and schedule of a film superhero. Names like Tom Hardy, Ethan Hawke and Jared Leo were thrown about. Hardy and Leto seem a little young and hunky. Hawke looks the closest to the original comic book character, but I don’t think viewers would believe him as a supernatural protector. As I mentioned, it’s a tough act. Who can manage to be likable, emotional, and pull off magic without feeling fake?
Well, there is a favorite. There is a man who can pull off all of the above and, although he hasn’t been confirmed for Doctor Strange, it’s likely it will be announced soon. As if he could wedge his way into any more franchises and fandoms, Benedict Cumberbatch could be the first glimpse into the supernatural realm of the Marvel Universe. Cumberbatch played coy recently in an interview with IGN. “I know a little bit about Doctor Strange,” he says with a cheeky grin. Is he toying with our emotions?! Is he simply being his normal charming self? I expect the official announcement to come soon.
Production is expected to start shooting in England in May 2015 and has a release date of November 4, 2016.
