What Happened to the Fantastic Four?

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong with the latest edition of The Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four, Fant4stic, whatever you want to call it. The cast was solid and the director was a fitting choice. So how is it that the film is now receiving tons of negative reviews?

Well frankly, it’s not that good. At least that’s popular opinion, and I mean very popular. The new film is the lowest rating Marvel movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving a 9% Rotten rating from critics and a measly 23% from fans. Even director Josh Trank was not thrilled with the overall product. On Twitter he aired his feelings out about his premiere expectations of the film, but the tweet was quickly deleted.

It seems that Trank wants us to believe that the studio, the easiest scapegoat, would be to blame. Truly, it’s hard not to blame Fox. You can’t help but wonder what the team would look like under Marvel’s cinematic wing. The film trickles by in a mere 100 minutes and feels largely unfinished. That’s 100 minutes for four origin stories. Even if Marvel actually wanted the rights back, it’s hard to picture Fox giving up a failed empire so that Marvel could possibly turn it into a moneymaking franchise.

Or perhaps the burnout is here. Comic book films are coming out at a breakneck pace. The Chris Evans and Jessica Alba version of Fantastic Four was released in just 2005. That’s only ten years ago, and now Hollywood decides to reboot the story and tell the origins again? Just slightly different? We’ve seen Uncle Ben die twice already, is that what we can expect from the upcoming Spider-Man featuring the new Peter Parker, Tom Holland? If an origin story is going to grab my attention and keep it then fine, I’ll buy a ticket, but I am not going to pay to see more of the same thing just a few years later, which is actually an article for another time. RE: Bad Boys, Jumanji, Baywatch movie news, etc.

It’s a sad statement, but it seems that the big screen Fantastic Four are dead. Three strikes and you’re out.

Guess you could say the franchise is… Doomed.
