V For Vendetta, A Sci-Fi Thriller

0

By Vulcon on August 31st, 2013

The movie V For Vendetta came out in 2005.  It follows a mysterious man as he attempts to bring freedom to the oppressed people of Britain, London specifically.  Without giving away the plot, the movie focuses on the revolution that the man, known only as V, starts.  He fights for freedom, doing whatever he needs to in order to achieve that end.

The movie is very fast paced, and it always kept my attention.  It has plenty of material for the intellectual in all of us, what with V’s philosophical arguments and the corrupt world built by the setting.  At the same time, it has moments that will satisfy the most avid action fans.  I will admit that, while I enjoy the story, plot, and characters, it is V’s fight scenes that I truly love about the movie.  They are chaotic, bloody, fast, violent, and amazing to watch.

I have talked with people who have read the original comic who say that the movie misses the point.  They say that the comic is more about gay rights than anything else, with V being gay himself.  I have not read the comic, so I cannot corroborate this.  I can say that if you have not read the comic, it does not matter.  There is nothing that you will not understand due to a lack of knowledge.

Another good thing about V For Vendetta is that it’s easy to follow.  Despite having some pretty dense material presented within it, V’s story and points are made very clear and easy to understand, which I know because I watched it with my parents and they got everything.  It’s dramatic, easy to understand, amazing to watch, what’s not to love?

It is interesting to note that V is a terrorist.  Despite this, the movie quickly identifies him as a protagonist and puts the viewer on his side.  This of course involves degenerating the government into nothing more than villains, but such is the price of loving the main character.

Of course, this movie contains a lot of adult themes and is certainly not for children.  There is a lot of blood and violence, along with all of the political themes and statements about authority that children will either not understand or perhaps skew in an unhealthy way.  V is a terrorist after all.  V For Vendetta is a great movie, just make sure the kids are asleep before you watch it.
