TRAILER TALK: Star Trek Beyond – Trailer #2
So after the tonal catastrophe that was the first Star Trek Beyond trailer, we got this.
Now, while the previous trailer requires no better description than the above sentence (although I must say, it is, in some ways, growing on me, but you didn’t read that here, or anywhere), this one is an improvement. That said, here’s the thing, I’m definitely excited, and I hope Jeremy Jahns is right about his Borg Theory. However, I was watching Star Trek: The Next Generation recently and I found myself loving every minute of it. I’ve always liked the show, but it really got me going this, hypothesizing with the characters, solving their mysteries and having their debates right where I sat. And I noticed (or rather re-noticed) something that I feel is still missing from these trailers: the intellectual exercise that is Star Trek.
Now, I realize that we can’t fully judge it until release, but there was a dip in this aspect of the franchise in the polarizing (yet successful) sequel that was Into Darkness. That’s not to say Into Darkness was a bad by any means, it just wasn’t quite as “talky & techy” as the 2009 reboot, which, in my opinion, was highly effective in that department. Just so we’re clear, that’s scary, because the best thing about Star Trek, as described by Mr. Bobby the Tongue, is the hypothetical nature of the universe in which it takes place. My hope is that, with this being Simon Pegg and Doug Jung’s script, the heart and soul of Trek will still be present in this otherwise “blockbuster-y” installment in the franchise.
