TRAILER TALK: Disney’s Tomorrowland

0

By Carly Fjeld on March 19th, 2015

Last week, a new trailer for Disney’s Tomorrowland starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson was released and you can check it out right here:

The film comes out on May 22nd and is directed by Brad Bird, known for The Iron Giant, Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, who also wrote the movie alongside Damon Lindelof, known for his work on Lost and more recently HBO’s The Leftovers.

The film has been somewhat shrouded in mystery since the announcement of its existence, but now we get a real idea of what to expect. Clooney, excitingly stepping up to play a crotchety old man, plays Frank, a former wunderkind who is tracked down by Robertson’s curious character, Casey, to figure out what this magical pin does and why it has fallen into her possession.

First impressions: meh. Clooney isn’t giving much of a performance, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt since it was mostly voiceover work, but I like Robertson and I’m excited to see Hugh Laurie (House) pop up. The rest of the cast seems pretty solid with appearances from Archer’s Judy Greer, Key & Peele’s Keegan-Michael Key and the hilarious Kathryn Hahn, but they didn’t receive any screen time in the teaser. There was a lot happening that excited me, but it’s the name in front of the title that leaves me in doubt.

Disney is obviously a powerhouse, however they’ve been struggling to strike gold in the live action world. Last year’s Into the Woods was certainly considered a success, but that could be attributed to the stellar cast and work of creator Stephen Sondheim. Films that have tried to go big have fallen really, really flat. In 2014, Maleficent was okay, but it was more stunning to see than to pay attention. Do I dare bring up the epic failures that were The Lone Ranger and John Carter? I don’t know if I’m sold yet, and I’m not even sure what it would take to get me to pay to see another Disney live action film, but it’s not this trailer.
