Top 5 Spaceships

Spaceships have been an integral part of science fiction since its early days in the 19th century.  Spaceships represent many things and often represent the tone or theme of the work they exist in.  Here in no particular order are the top 5 spaceships:

The Millennium Falcon has been described as the hot-rod of space.  It’s been customized, and rebuilt so many times even Han has lost count probably.  It’s easily the most iconic starship in all of Star Wars.  It’s dirty, unreliable, and often seems to be held together by space duct tape and paper clips.  But when it works, it’s the fastest ship in the galaxy.  She’s, and yes the Falcon’s a she, the ship we all wanted when we were kids.  The Falcon won’t get you anywhere in style, but it’ll get you there before anyone else.

Besides the Millennium Falcon, the second most recognized starship is the USS NCC-1701 Enterprise.  Hell, even non-fans know what the Enterprise looks like.  I mean, they named a bloody Space Shuttle after it!  The Enterprise could do it all.  It was an exploration vessel, a warship, and a research vessel.  It’s an example of mankind’s desire to explore the stars and see what’s in the final frontier.

The Serenity from Firefly is what happens when you take the Millennium Falcon and decide that it looks too well built.  Serenity is like its crew, cobbled together, reliable, and sometimes doesn’t always work the way it should.  But it hasn’t failed its crew yet.  Firefly makes it clear that Serenity is more than just a ship to its crew, it’s their home.  It’s not particularly fancy, fast, or well-armed but it gets the job done.  Just like its crew.  Plus, it’s one of the first starships you actually get to see a toilet on.

The SSV Normandy is probably the coolest video game ship of the last decade.  It harkens both to the Millennium Falcon and the Enterprise.  On the one hand it’s a military vessel and operates under the human government, the Alliance, like the Enterprise.  But by Mass Effect 2, the SSV-2 Normandy is your personal ride that you can customize and pimp out to your heart’s content.  It’s stated multiple times that it’s the most advanced ship in the galaxy and it lives up to its praise.  The Normandy is easily the second logo of the Mass Effect series.  It’s slick, reliable, and damn nice to look at.

Last but not least is the ever beloved TARDIS from Doctor Who.  For those unaware, it stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space.  Why is it so cool?  Well, besides being a vessel that can take you anywhere in space, it can also take you anywhere in time.  Yes, it’s a spaceship and time machine for the price of one.  Oh, and it’s bigger on the inside.  Like infinitely bigger.  It’s also psychic, has a sense of humor and can be used to tow a planet.  It’s basically the greatest ship ever.  Plus, if you don’t like the interior, you can always change the desktop settings.  The outside, well, you learn to love the color blue.
