Top 5 Science Fiction Shows
Firefly
Firefly conjures up a lot of emotions among its fans. It inspires deep affection and love for its quality, characters, and interesting view of the future. It also inspires deep and abiding rage at FOX for cancelling the series after one season. But as a whole, Firefly is seen as how a science fiction show should be done. It’s got action, comedy, heart, and it blends two great genres: westerns and science fiction. Firefly follows the crew of the starship Serenity as they try to make a living any way they can in the frontier that is space. I highly recommend this series if you haven’t seen it already.
Eureka
Eureka is one of the better shows put out by SyFy. Eureka is a comedy/sci-fi show that focuses on the titular small town in the American Northwest, a small town that also happens to be completely populated by the smartest scientists on the planet. The show follows the town Sherriff Jack Carter, the town’s only resident non-genius, as he tries to keep in order in a town with scientists who put Victor Frankenstein to shame. The show’s filled with technobabble and follows a predictable “crisis of the week” structure, but also contains some overarching stories. It’s a lot a fun and good for a few laughs.
Star Trek
Yeah, it’s not just one series, but seriously can you name a bad Star Trek series? Except for Enterprise? That’s one of the strengths of the franchise, every series, well almost every series, has at least a few good episodes in it. If you’re a science fiction fan and haven’t watched at least one episode of Star Trek then for shame! Its place on this list is a no-brainer. It’s the series that made science fiction popular and cool and created what is the modern concept of fandoms. No matter what your position on Kirk vs. Picard, you’ll love Star Trek. If you haven’t seen any episode, then get your ass on it!
Dollhouse
Another Joss Whedon creation, Dollhouse concerns itself with a deep philosophical question: what makes a person? In the universe of Dollhouse, a company has developed the ability to wipe a person’s entire mind, their personalities, everything and store them on computers. They then in turn are able to implant new constructed personalities into the blank slate person, called a doll. These dolls are then in turn hired out to serve as whatever the client needs: a call girl, an escort, or even a nanny. It’s a great series and highly entertaining.
Doctor Who
Doctor Who has the greatest premise for a television show. It follows an alien, The Doctor, who can travel throughout time. Essentially it means you can tell any type of story, futuristic sci-fi, historical drama, or both combined usually. The show is currently the longest running sci-fi show in history and has been on television for decades. It’s fun, exciting and great for fans of any age.
