If there is one thing I can always count on when watching Doctor Who it’s memorable villains. After almost 50 years on air, Doctor Who still continues to bring us villains that we fear and love, and others that we count on to make an appearance each series. The upcoming series of Doctor Who is guaranteed to bring exciting new characters and villains, as it is the 50th anniversary of the show being on air, and in preparation for series 7 here are five of the most memorable Doctor Who villains from the past seven series.
You know them, you love them, you fear them, and when they are off duty they unclog your toilets. They are, of course, the Dalek’s, the Doctor’s greatest enemy who make an appearance each series, because they just can’t seem to die for good. The Daleks are classic Doctor Who villains, and I would bet all of the fans have a soft spot for them, and how could you not? The Doctor without the Daleks would be like Harry Potter without Voldemort, it’s just inconceivable. Now, they did get a make over recently and are looking a little more colorful than usual, but just because their outward appearance looks more friendly, doesn’t mean their hate for all things non-Dalek has changed. I can’t wait to see how Moffat incorporates them into the new series; personally, I hope be brings them back for the 50th anniversary episode.
Cybermen
Another set of classic Doctor Who villains are the Cybermen, who remind me very much of the Daleks, if only because they lack all sympathetic human emotions. Essentially, they are mindless killers who destroy all those who refuse to become like them. Oddly enough though, the Cybermen scare me more than the Daleks because the most the Daleks can do is kill you, but the Cybermen have the capacity to turn you into one of them. Now, the Cybermen haven’t made an appearance since their brief stint in series 5 when the Pandorica was opened, but I’ve no doubt that we will see them again in series 7.
Out of all of the villains that have made an appearance on Doctor Who the Weeping Angels are the one’s that scare me the most, as they are some of the most unsuspecting monsters. They are nearly impossible to distinguish from other statues, and by the time you realize what they are, well, it’s usually too late. However, though they are the most frightening, they are my favorite villains too. Each time they make an appearance I am left on the edge of my seat, awaiting their next attack, with my eyes glued open just like the characters on the screen. It has already been revealed that the Weeping Angels will make an appearance in Amy and Rory’s final adventure with the Doctor in episode 5 of series 7, so don’t blink, or you might miss them.
Vashta Nerada
The Vashta Nerada faced off against the Tenth Doctor in the episode Silence in the Library, and left everyone who saw his or her shadow frozen with fear. I won’t lie, after watching that episode I may have sidestepped all shadows that came into view. Alone the Vashta Nerada are harmless, however, in a swarm they can eat all the flesh off a body in milliseconds. So you best stay out of the shadows, because you never know what could be hiding in them.
It is hard to say that the boy from The Empty Child in series 1 is a villain, but he makes the list all the same. The Empty Child is probably one of the creepiest Doctor Who episodes, as it is definitely reminiscent of Child’s Play or Pet Cemetery, basically anything with creepy children sends me running and that’s exactly what this episode entailed. However, despite that, the entire plot of the two-episode story arc was brilliant, and you want nothing more than to help the child calling for his Mummy, but at the same time you know the terrifying fate of those he comes in contact with. The one fact that makes this villain different than all the others in the series though is that he is not really a villain, and in the end everybody lives, and it is one of the moments where we see the Doctor at his happiest.
What are some of you’re favorite Doctor Who villains? Are there any in particular you hope make it into series 7?
