Top 5 Big-Budget Games You Can Play for Free

Free to play games are not all low-budget, graphically inferior games. Here is a list of five big-budget sci-fi and fantasy games that you can download and play for free. All of them were developed by big-name companies in the gaming industry and had million-dollar budgets.

So why are they free to play if they are so good? These are all persistent world online games similar to World of Warcraft or Runescape. There is no charge for downloading or playing them but they are monetized in different ways, for example through a premium membership system or an in-game cash shop. Don’t let that put you off trying these games though. You can still look forward to hundreds of hours of play time without having to spend a dime. Most people either never buy anything or they only purchase items after they have exhausted the free content.

Top 5 Big-Budget Games You Can Play for Free

Star Trek Online – the favorite game of scifi fans everywhere, Star Trek Online will bring out the geek in you. Players can look forward to great quests, space combat action, stunning 3D graphics and a passionate, devoted player base. If you want classic scifi stories of exploration in space, this is the game for you.

DC Universe Online – many are calling DCUO 2012’s top free to play game. The concept is simple: create a superhero character, go to Metropolis or Gotham City and fight villains. Players can’t play as any of the well-known DC Universe superheroes like Batman but this game is very, very good nonetheless.

Dungeons & Dragons Online – the graphics of this game are not as good as the others listed here but the 3D animation and effects are still quite good. Based on the D&D franchise, Dungeons and Dragons Online features tons of dungeons that are best tackled with a bunch of other players. This is the perfect game for players who love cooperative multi-player games.

Lord of the Rings Online – based on the classic fantasy series by Tolkien, LotRO has incredibly realistic 3D graphics. The download is rather big for an online game, around 7GB but that is because of the high quality and polish of the graphics and gameplay. This is truly one of the best big-budget online games available.

Age of Conan – the Conan setting is full of half-naked barbarians, bloody combat and is not for kids. This unrated game is the dark, gritty fantasy type, not for the faint of heart. Proceed with caution. AoC is an excellent game meant for people who are tired of the usual casual games. Featuring no-holds barred player vs player combat, Age of Conan has incredibly detailed graphics and even sound. Players will be able to hear the clanging sound when their sword hist something and there are subtle environment sound effects like wolves howling in distance that makes the virtual setting seem like a real, living and breathing world.
