This Christmas It’s the Night of the Comet

0

By Carly Fjeld on December 19th, 2014

It’s the holiday season, and if you’re like me you’re so done with crowded shopping malls and Michael Bublé belting out Christmas hits on the radio. You know what sounds way better? A night at home, curled up by the fire place with a hot cocoa…or whiskey (your preference), and your favorite science fiction-comedy-disaster film. Don’t have one? Well, you’re welcome, because I have one for you.

Night of the Comet is a true gem to come out of 1984. The premise involves Earth moving through the tail of a comet which causes the elimination of most of life on the planet right before Christmas. The remaining threats left on Earth must be dealt with by…two total Valley Girls. What sort of shenanigans can they get into?! Well, when the world goes dark, the Valley Girls go to the mall. They also have to deal with some repercussions of the comet, but I really don’t want to give any of it away, because it’s classic B-picture excitement and you should go in blind. It’s outrageously ridiculous, totally 80s technicolor, and so very much fun. Are you really going to watch Elf for the fiftieth time?

It’s directed by Thom Eberhardt and stars Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelly Maroney. Yeah, they’re not names you recognize, but they deliver as best they can. The film holds an 82% Fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes and a slew of critics offer praise.

You can check out the trailer in its horrible sound quality and pixelated glory below.

See?! How can you say no to that? Don’t spend another minute watching blubbery Hallmark movies or whatever’s playing on ABC Family. Take a chance on this little ditty, and be sure to let us know what you think. My Twitter handle is below, so feel free to thank me over there.
