Syfy to Adapt Brave New World

Brave New World is an iconic science fiction novel written in 1932 by Aldous Huxley. It’s largely considered one of the best books of all time. Now it’s up to Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Television, to do it justice on the small screen.

Now, brace yourself, because it will be adapted for the Syfy channel. However, it is being overseen by the team that produced the award winning series Taken for the channel in 2002.

Brave New World is an interesting look at how the future could unfold. The world is ridden of terrible things and given strict uniform order. People are simply bred to portray certain roles in society and that’s that. That doesn’t bode well with everyone.

The classic tale has seen its fair share of adaptations. There were two radio broadcasts, one in 1956 and the other in 2013 as well as two films. The first was produced in 1980 as a film for television directed by Burt Brinckherhoff. The second television film was released in 1998 and directed by Leslie Libman and Larry Williams. Back in 2009, Ridley Scott had gotten his hands on the rights and was looking forward to directing the film as a feature. Even Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to the project at one point, but that fell through once Scott decided to work on the Prometheus series.

It would be nice to see the book on the big screen with the budget and attention it deserves, but perhaps it will find success over on Syfy. The miniseries form is hitting its stride in mainstream media and Syfy, while hitting a few bumps, seems to be finding its way back to good science fiction. There is currently no word on when the series will go into production or when it will be released.
