Star Wars Character Names Released

Now we can put some names to those mysterious faces in the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Very few names, but names, guys.

The characters were revealed through some retro Topps trading cards exclusively through Entertainment Weekly that featured screenshots from the teaser. The gallery is over at EW, here.

The rolling droid is BB-8, and I truly hope they pronounce it “baby 8” for my own personal enjoyment. That awesome shot of Oscar Isaac as an X-Wing pilot is used to introduce Isaac as Poe Dameron. The man behind the menacing light saber, the actor still unknown, is Kylo Ren. The woman on the strange speeder, played by Daisy Ridley is known only as Rey. The running scared Stormtrooper from the beginning of the trailer is Finn, and he’s played by John Boyega.

Still cloaked in mystery are the characters of the veterans Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, as well as any newbies such as 12 Years a Slaves Lupita Nyong’o, Girls’ Adam Driver, About Time’s Domhall Gleeson, Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie, and the legendary Max von Sydow. It was confirmed that Andy Serkis was the voice of the trailer, but his character is also unknown. From the dialogue alone, I don’t think he’s one of the good guys. From another interview with EW, Serkis gives some hints that his likeness may not appear in the movie. When asked if he himself would be onscreen he replied, “I can’t say a single thing about that!” He’s also hopeful that his role will earn him an action figure, so I’m thinking not a human.

We are officially a year away from the December 18th release date, and in all honesty, I hope we don’t see much more from The Force Awakens. Wouldn’t it be nice to walk into the theater and be completely surprised? A massive addition to a legendary franchise is already being held to incredibly high standards, and I think that trying to prove it’s worthy by exploiting Ford, Hamill, and Fisher is a waste. I’m glad everything is shrouded in secrecy, and I’m hoping Abrams can play this right and keep a lid on it.
