Star-Crossed Review: Season One, Episode Six – “Stabbed with a White Wench’s Black Eye”

Star-Crossed opens another episode with a bang, this time courtesy of the Red Hawks. They planned to bomb the Atrian Sector but undercover Trag Zoe (played by Dora Madison Burge) blew them up instead.

As retribution, Zoe and Drake (played by Greg Finley) are tasked with kidnapping Grayson (played by Grey Damon) at a fancy ball his parents (the Red Hawk leaders) are throwing. They hope they can use him to get his parents to release several Atrian prisoners they apparently have, including their parents. Roman (played by Matt Lanter) catches on to their plans and stops them while they make their getaway. Zoe nearly kills Roman, which is enough to make Drake question his loyalties to the Trags, and they take her down. Drake wants to kill Zoe for the sake of protection. Roman is against it, and Zoe makes her escape swearing they will both soon be dead.

This is a very action packed episode and an enjoyable one. It’s good that the show reflects on the fact that, while Drake may want to be a soldier, he’s still just a kid who’s in over his head. The Zoe character has been great so far and I was glad she hasn’t been killed off yet. There’s plenty of story left for her. Hopefully, there will also be confirmation as to whether or not there are Atrian prisoners somewhere.

Emery (played by Aimee Teegarden) is brought back into the main story after a reporter threatens to tell the world about how Atrians can use Cyper to cure humans using a video of her admitting it. Emery decides to give him a better story by leading him to a secret Red Hawk meeting so he can report on their activities. At the meeting, Grayson’s mother Margaret (played by Deena Dill) reveals herself as the Grand Matriarch of the Red Hawks and boasts that they are preparing for a more devastating attack on the Atrians. But, to cover herself anyway, she uses a cool little gadget to delete his recording of her saying the truth about Cyper.

It’s good to see Emery back in the Atrian storyline and not off in some boring B plot. Watching Margaret go from being smug in her meeting to sullen as she’s arrested is a satisfying moment. The storyline also introduces another character, Ms. Eva Benton (played by Stephanie Jacobsen), a teacher at the school who seems to have a vested interest in the Atrians. It’s mentioned that there are several Red Hawk spies in the high school, and her pillow chat with the reporter, asking questions about the Cyper story, suggests she could be one of them.

While it at first feels strange that about half the main cast is absent from the episode, it pays off since it keeps the story more focused. That also means plenty of screen time for the Emery/Roman/Grayson love triangle. From what I can gather, she wants to be with Roman but still likes Grayson and feels bad for what he’s going through. She’ll eventually end up with Roman anyway, so the sooner the show stops dragging that out the better.

The Red Hawk meeting looked like it was made up of a bunch of drunken rednecks.

“How do you know his parents are the leaders?” “Because those two idiot Red Hawks squealed like little piggy’s right before they went boom!”

Hopefully, there’s more to Ms. Benton, there’s always room for another Femme Fatale.

“Not all humans are Red Hawks Drake.” “Humans put us in this prison. That’s why I don’t make a distinction.”
