Star-Crossed Review: Season One, Episode Seven – “To Seek a Foe”

First aired March 21st, 2014.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, especially when that woman is an undercover alien soldier. After Zoe’s plans last episode were thwarted by Roman and Drake, she moves on to a new plan: killing every human in town.

The cube that was planted a while back has grown into a tree full of poisonous Black Cyper leaves that are hours away from releasing spores toxic to humans. To test its effectiveness, Zoe leaves a leaf in the car of her former human BFF, Taylor, but Lukas ends up getting poisoned. Roman’s uncle, Castor, just happens to have an explosive capable of destroying the tree, which is just hours away from releasing spores. The only cure for Lukas is a freshly grown leaf mixed with Atrian blood.

The Black Cyper storyline seemed like it would be a season finale conflict and it was surprising to see it happen so soon. Since this is only the middle of the season, it was pretty obvious the plant would be destroyed. Hopefully this means there will be an even more exciting plot to end the season with. An epic battle between the Atrian Trags and the human Red Hawks would be great to see and it certainly has been building up over the course of the show.

Roman, Drake and Emery play junior detectives, searching for the location of the tree. They learn that a local hiker died from symptoms similar to Lukas near an isolated lake. Zoe’s waiting with a large katana and fights the boys while Emery sets the explosives and collects a leaf to heal Lukas. But, since the plant is poisonous to her, she’s trapped and Roman barely gets her out in time. While underwater they share a passionate kiss, both because Roman is able to give her oxygen that way and because he’s been dying to lock lips with her.

Apparently, all it took was a fiery explosion to light the spark between Roman and Emery. There is definitely more chemistry between them then there was with Emery and Grayson. Maybe now the love triangle is finally over. I was disappointed when Zoe was killed in the explosion because she had been a very good villain. There was definitely more to be explored with her character and it felt too soon to have her killed off.

However, it looks as though Ms. Benton is stepping up to be a new villain. She swiped some cups that Emery and Julia drank from and tested the DNA for traces of Cyper. It appears she knows that at least one of them used Cyper for medical purposes, although what she plans to do with that information is unknown. Her smug smile when she learns Julia tested positive suggests nothing good.

Also interesting was Sophia revealing that her crush on Taylor wasn’t because she was strictly into girls. Atians are very fluid with their sexuality and same-sex relationships are common in their society. That being said, only Sophia has displayed that sensibility so far, but it’s something that should definitely be looked into more as the show progresses.

Quotes/Thoughts

Katana vs. Big Branch: Katana always wins.

“Atrians don’t choose who we love based on gender. Isn’t that…limiting?”

Castor either collects explosives as a hobby or he’s planning something sinister.

“Hey, Zoe, you know what your problem is? You talk too damn much.”
