Return of the Sequels: Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies to Take Note Of
Almost 10 years later and we have the return of our favorite secret extraterrestrial alien agency, the Men in Black. After Agent J (Will Smith) learns that Agent K’s life (Tommy Lee Jones) and the fate of the earth are intertwined, we will now travel back to 1969 in an attempt to save the future. Alongside the younger K (Josh Brolin), J will only have 24 hours to assassinate the alien criminal named Boris before he is trapped in the past for good. From just reading this synopsis, we can already tell that J has a lot to juggle on his shoulders. The focus now drifts away from a single “mission” plot that adhered to the previous installments to multiple sub-missions under the larger goal of saving mankind. So be sure not to look directly at the neuralyzer because this will be an intense adventure you do not want to forget.
2. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (June 29th)
Yes, you read correctly, I listed G.I. Joe 2 as an upcoming movie that is worth a second chance. While the main attractions of the first movie were cool gadgets, the “almost” indestructible super suits and a brunette Sienna Miller in a tight leather suit, we now shift to a new ensemble in the goodie bag. The sequel will feature Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Fast Five) and Bruce Willis (Die Hard) among others. Personally, I’m not a Channing Tatum fan, but I have enjoyed watching these two actors on the big screen. With that said, their addition to this sequel tells me to purchase another ticket to check the movie out. Byung-hun Lee and Ray Park also return to reprise their roles from the first film, which will be sure to generate some neat combat scenes of Black vs. White, ninja style. As for the plot, we see the return of the Joes who will be going against the newly released Cobra Commander and Zartan, the main villains who hold world leaders captive and risk the possibility of nuclear warfare. A fairly simple plot, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what this new ensemble has to offer.
3. The Dark Knight Rises (July 20th)
The title alone speaks for itself. Its predecessor was brilliant, and despite the regrettable loss of the Joker (RIP Heath Ledger), Christopher Nolan will be sure to spew out new tricks that will leave us amazed and wanting more. Christian Bale returns to reprise his all-star role as Batman, alongside other familiar faces such as Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman. A new cast will also heat things up even further, which includes the introduction of Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) and Bane (Tom Hardy), two villains from the Batman mythology. Eight years after the events of the Dark Knight, Batman returns to Gotham city and intercepts Bane’s plans of total destruction. Without spoiling the plot too much, I’ll let the trailer below do the talking.
4. Iron Man 3 (2013)
“Mr. Stark displays textbook…narcissism.”
[Stark looks at Nick Fury, who stares back at him]
“Agreed.”
The third installment of the Iron Man series, Robert Downey, Jr. will be back with his suit to dazzle us with both his unending sarcasm and high-tech combat moves. The plot has yet to be revealed but what we do know at the moment is the change of directorship. Jon Favreau – as great as he was in both directing and playing the role of Tony Stark’s faithful driver – has stepped down the podium and passed the torch to Shane Black. Regardless, Favreau will serve as a producer (probably to make sure things stay in check). There’s only so much that we can speculate about at this moment, but maybe a director change might be just what the franchise needs to kick things up a notch.
