It’s been the subject of songs, movies, and a few television adaptations, but Hollywood wants another crack at George Orwell’s 1984. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that English director Paul Greengrass will get an opportunity to bring his vision to life.
Previously Greengrass directed two films from the Jason Bourne series (not that weird installation with Jeremy Renner) and the recent Tom Hanks drama Captain Phillips. In 2007 he was nominated for an Academy Award for United 93. The production is in the very early stages and no actors have been announced, but Greengrass certainly does enjoy working with Matt Damon.
Orwell’s 1984 is the dystopian tale of political fiction. Seriously, if you haven’t read it, go do so immediately. The book touches on the concept of Big Brother, a tyrannical member of power that reminds its citizens they are always being watched.
Other versions of the story often have a futuristic feel, but Greengrass could take advantage of the leak revealing that the National Security Agency regularly peaks at citizens. Our social medias allow people an in-depth look into our personal lives and emotions, and almost every intimate detail can be tracked down online. So, does it seem like a dystopian future, or the foreseeable one?
Greengrass could bring a lot to this adaptation. His trademark handy-cam style and flair for retelling true events could be the style this story needs to become a part of new generations. In fact, Greengrass himself coauthored a controversial novel entitled Spycatcher: The Candid Autobiography of a Senior Intelligence Officer with former MI5 officer Peter Wright. The book contained private information pertaining to British Intelligence Agencies and the government quickly moved to ban the book, but efforts proved futile.
It seems Greengrass may have a few things to say about government, censorship, and political order.
