MUSICAL MUSINGS: Hunger Tango by Blue Tofu

So this video is kind of weird.

I’m no stranger to music videos with a bit of an out-there concept, especially when I review science fiction-themed ones; but this is just odd.

In fact, let me be blunt here: I’m not a fan of the video.

It looks like some sort of strange combination between hippies and Star Trek. The computer-generated effects look terrible, and everyone but the main cast seem like they were randomly pulled off the street.

And then there’s that blue crystal ball/control panel…thing. Honestly, what was that? Did it actually do anything? Was she somehow controlling the spaceship by gently caressing it?

The visual aspect seems, overall, ill-conceived. They want to have this unnerving alien abduction story, and it really falls flat.

But that’s the video. The song on the other hand…is just…really good guys. It reminds me of the kind of thing you would hear in a high class bar, the kind of music that plays to relax you, and drift you away.

I’ve on occasion said that there are songs that demand you dance to them. This song, however, commands you sway to it, to grab the nearest person and spin them. It’s seductive, the human version of a snake charmer’s tune. The fact that the lyrics are hard to discern is actually a plus when it comes to this one. Every word that you do recognize is a promise, a whisper in your ear.

It’s the kind of song that needs a live performances, but even through my speakers it sort of was anyway. Every time I closed my eyes, I pictured myself on some couch in a dimly lit club with couples spinning and dancing around me. I had my feet up, and some unknown drink in my hand, and a quiet conversation was occurring next to me.

All of that conjured from nothing but a slow, flowing, gorgeously sung melody. A melody that is also a narrative, but not one of aliens and abductions. Instead, it is the story of a quiet night, waiting for your lover to arrive, while you ride a slow pulse of content joy.
