Minority Report Looking to Return

Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report is looking for new life on your TV screen. The people over at Fox have shelled out the big bucks for the pilot written and produced by Godzilla’s Max Borenstein. It hails from Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, which also has Falling Skies, Extant and Under the Dome on the air.

The film version occurs in 2054 and stars Tom Cruise as Chief John Aderton, head of the Precrime police force in Washington D.C., where three mutated humans are used for their precognitive abilities. The “Precogs” are able to see murders before they happen and lead the police to the killers before the crimes occur.

The series will take place ten years after the events of the 2002 film and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows one of the Precogs who struggles dealing with normal life when his visions don’t stop after the end of Precrime. He acquires the help of a female detective haunted by her own past to help him find a place for his gift once more.

As of now, there is only a pilot ordered, but sources insist that it’s very likely it will continue to series. Fox is notorious for failed science fiction series, and usually the network is blamed for giving up on shows like Firefly, Dollhouse and last year’s Almost Human too soon. If Minority Report does find itself in Fox’s lineup then showrunners better hope that an audience finds it and attaches themselves quickly. The executives at Fox seem too quick to judge if viewers don’t turn up right away. Hopefully, Spielberg’s name draws more attention from fans than J.J. Abrams did for his detective thriller, Almost Human. And perhaps after the success of his reptilian romp this summer, Borenstein may be able gather some interest as well. If it turns out to be good and it gathers a following, then Fox could give it a chance for longer than one season, and allow more fans to become invested.
