Magic: The Gathering, A Better Card Game Than Yu-gi-oh!

Magic: The Gathering, more commonly known as simply Magic, is the first collectible trading card game.  It was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993.  A player can create his own deck using cards he obtains through booster packs, etc.  He is then able to play against other players, who will have a deck of their own.  This is what makes a trading card game so interesting.  It allows for each player to customize their own deck to suit their play style or utilize the cards they have in the best possible way.

In a game, each player has a deck of at least 60 cards.  There can be more than 60 in a deck but 60 is recommended as it helps you to draw your best cards.  One cool thing about Magic cards is that they are made to work together, unlike Yu-gi-oh, which focuses on the power of individual cards.  Each cards requires mana to cast, which is obtained mainly from land cards.  Each land card has a specific color, which can only be used to summon certain cards.  This means that you will need to fill your deck with cards that can use that color.  This is a direct cause of themed decks, which are much more interesting than packing a deck with as much power as you can manage.

Another thing that makes Magic great is the fact that monsters with low stats aren’t useless, even if they don’t have an effect or ability.  Weak monsters cost less than larger monsters and enough of them can overwhelm even the most powerful of creatures.  Also, in Magic, battle is much more interesting than Yu-gi-oh, and much more strategic as well.  The attacker attacks the opposing player with whatever creatures he wishes to (so long as he can do it of course) and then the defender chooses which creatures to block with, as well as which creatures to block.  This means that a weak monster can sit on the field and not have to worry about getting killed by a powerful enemy creature.  It also means that multiple creatures can block one enemy creature to destroy it.

All in all, Magic offers deep strategic gameplay, with plenty of deckbuilding options as well as play styles.  It’s a lot of fun to play, easy to learn, and is usually cheaper than other trading card games.  I’ve played card games since I was a kid.  I played a lot of Yu-gi-oh in my day, as well as a lot of Poke’mon cards, so I know my way around these games.  However, after playing Magic, I just can’t really play the others anymore.  It’s a much better system, with a better selection of cards, and it’s a lot more interesting to play.  If you like card games and haven’t play Magic, I highly recommend checking it out.  It’s still really popular and has a massive fan base, so you shouldn’t have any problem finding information on it or people to play with.
