It’s Baaaaaack: Poltergeist Gets New Teasers

I can’t say I’m ever really excited for remakes, but if I was holding out for one this year, then I think it would be the reimagined Poltergeist. 

The film is directed by Gil Kenan, best known for Monster House, and produced by Evil Dead team Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi along with remake specialist Roy Lee, who has adapted plenty of Asian films for U.S. box offices. The screenplay was written by David Lindsay-Abaire, a well known playwright and screenwriter for films such as Rabbit Hole and Rise of the Guardians. There also happens to be a knockout cast. Sam Rockwell (Moon, Seven Psychopaths) is Eric Bowen, a suburban father whose family must deal with particularly feisty housemates. Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married, Your Sister’s Sister) plays his wife, Amy, and their children are played by Saxon Sharbino, Kyle Catlett, and Kennedi Clements. Also featured is Mad Men’s Jared Harris, as Carrigan Burke, a TV personality sent to investigate the happenings of the house.

There are plenty of nods to the original and heaps of (maybe a bit too much) CGI, but the two trailers pack a lot of punch. The film claims not to be an exact remake, but more of a reimagining. It is a bit worrisome seeing the amount of scares between the teasers because one must hope that something of surprise is left for the film. Dat clown, doe.

Let’s also hope that the film doesn’t find itself in the way of an alleged curse that plagued the original Poltergeist of 1982. Supposedly, the movie had used real human remains as props for a scene and that set the whole thing off. Actress JoBeth Williams said she would return to her trailer to find pictures askew. However, the curse is focused on the deaths of four cast members during or shortly after the release of the trilogy. Two deaths weren’t very unusual as actor Julian Beck died from an 18 month battle with cancer and Will Sampson from complications from a heart-lung transplant. The most shocking deaths were of young actress Dominique Dunne and Heather O’ Rourke who played the young daughters Dana and Carol Anne Freeling. Dunne was murdered by an ex boyfriend in her driveway and 12 year old O’ Rourke passed away on the operating table after complications from being misdiagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Spooky, huh?
