Ice Age

It’s miraculous fame and success still has no signs of stopping, after 4 films, toys and many video games, people still want to see more. What can be rare in film these days is to attract such a big audience. That’s one of the charming qualities of Ice Age, its stories and jokes, not only connects with the younger audience, but the parents and older people too, as it goes over certain heads.

The Ice Age itself is more a setting for the film and an antagonist. The film actually revolves around a delightful animated set of animals mainly consisting of a saber-toothed tiger (Diego), a woolly mammoth (Manfred) and a sloth (Sid), who all come across a stranded human infant they decide to return to the human tribe.

Queue the adventure, laughs and colorful characters, upon discovering the infant everything spirals out of control as the group are faced with different obstacles. The animation is very well edited; lighting is authentic looking and rich, with reports on the efficient lighting, being from a new software and better than some of the previous versions of CGI software, in other films. The sound is more realistic than you’d expect too.

But having said all of this, it really boils down to the characters mannerisms, individual desires and different comical actions they take. One of the highlights being, a very scatty squirrel funnily enough named Scrat, being a perfect name. Scrat always looks as though he just got electrocuted, right before it cuts to him. The precise attention to detail with the film, is certainly realized when seeing this little chap (“c-mon” look at his little face). Who wouldn’t smile looking at the picture above, of Scrat?!

The choice to have Scrat as a separate character in a subplot, to an already good main plot was a good one, as it represents his isolation better, with his food he just wants to devour, that you can see him targeting above. It’s a charming fantasy for all ages, and though I’d like to say it’s heart-warming, saying its “cool” would probably be more relevant.
